Chapter 519 Wanting to Spend More of Ms. Baker's Money
Donovan and Chloe were silent, but the silence was filled with an electric tension. Chloe could almost hear her own heartbeat.
Donovan couldn't help himself; he leaned down and kissed her forehead. "I heard the school's handing out new honorary professor titles. Let's see if anyone can match up to me."
Chloe's grip on his arm tightened, her eyes locked on him, thinking, 'Does he know Derek's coming?'
Feeling like she might give herself away if she stayed any longer, Chloe got up.
Trying to stay cool, she said, "I'm heading to the cafeteria. You coming?"
"Sure."
Chloe thought, 'I was just being polite, hinting for him to leave. Who knew he'd actually take me up on it? But I couldn't take it back now.'
They headed to the faculty cafeteria. She grabbed two trays and handed one to Donovan. "What do you want? I'll get it for you."
The cafeteria didn't take cash.
Surprisingly, Donovan wasn't shy and ordered a bunch of dishes and a bowl of soup. "What a pity!" He sighed.
"Why?" Chloe looked at the food he picked, feeling a bit annoyed.
"I wanted to spend more of Ms. Baker's money, but the school's food is cheap." Donovan said.
"Well, I can't afford anything expensive."
"Do you need to borrow some? What about the twenty million I gave you before?" he asked.
Chloe paused. "That was your money; I didn't want to spend it. I only kept the two and a half million I deserved."
"So, you're saving money for me?" Donovan said coldly.
Keeping the two and a half million meant she still saw their marriage as a contract. Since the contract was valid, she took the "bonus" from it. She never saw herself as Donovan's wife and didn't think she should get that much money.
"I don't feel right taking it," Chloe said. After that, they ate in silence.
Cynthia showed up to eat too. She saw Donovan and Chloe, then walked over and said, "It's rare to see Mr. Blake here. Quite the guest."
"Join us," Donovan said, thinking about Cynthia's character. Intellectuals like her had many schemes and were adept at targeting others' weaknesses. Donovan didn't want her to harm Chloe, so he acted normal.
Chloe also politely invited Cynthia to sit.
"Is it okay if I join you two? Hope I'm not interrupting," Cynthia said, pretending to be nice.
"How could it be?" Donovan shot back.
He quickly put on a cold, intimidating face that even made Cynthia nervous.
"Is there no other way to keep Jeffery from joining the military?" Cynthia asked.
"What else can be done? For what he did, he deserves to lose half his life," Donovan replied.
Cynthia trembled.
Jeffery was just taking the fall for her.But since he was definitely joining the military, Cynthia figured they didn't suspect her, and she secretly sighed in relief.
Chloe found it odd and thought, 'Donovan didn't say that at home. Why the sudden change?'
But she kept quiet.
"If anyone else tries something like that again, I'll make sure they suffer," Donovan said, finishing his meal and wiping his mouth with a napkin. His refined and noble demeanor, combined with his casual tone, made it hard to believe he could say such harsh words.
As Donovan's classmate, Cynthia knew he was a man of his word, so she didn't dare to speak.
