Chapter 98: How much of it is sincere?

Chloe is puzzled.

"What's so intimidating about him?" she wondered.

"Don't speak without considering the consequences. Have you heard about how strict and efficient he used to be? He fired the entire PR department. Weren't you scared of him before when you were sleeping with him?" Sofia said with a hint of fear.

When he fired people, Chloe hadn't joined the company yet, so she didn't know what had happened.

But she did used to be afraid of him. During a team-building event, when her phone rang in his hands, she nearly jumped out of her skin.

"Continue helping me tomorrow," Sofia said.

"How can I help?" Chloe stopped in her tracks. From Sofia's tone, she felt a malicious intention.

"Dress modestly for me, even poorly, to make it seem like you come from a poorer background." Sofia said longingly.

"Alright, so you just want to show Logan's parents that you don't mind having poor friends. Understood. Afraid I'll steal your limelight," Chloe said.

Work was over.

Chloe got into Donovan's car.

"I've agreed with Sofia today. I'll accompany her to her sister's house tomorrow afternoon. Logan is her sister's brother-in-law, so she wants to meet her in-laws. She asked me to go with her and I agreed, so I'll be taking a leave with you," Chloe said seriously.

"Go ahead," Donovan replied in a mild tone.

He knew what Chloe had said in the training class today was just a temporary measure, maybe to avoid making him angry, but regardless, it sounded nice.

There was silence between the two again.

Chloe suddenly remembered about him firing the entire PR department and brought up the topic again. "I heard that you fired the entire PR department before. Why?"

"Don't like them," Donovan replied.

Chloe made a sound of agreement, but she couldn't help but disapprove of his answer. It was so difficult to find a job now, and he just fired everyone because he didn't like them. Wasn't it absurd?

"Is there no reason?" Chloe asked again.

"Don't seek office but seek merit. The self-media articles they wrote were always exaggerating," Donovan said.

Chloe suddenly felt a bit awkward and turned to look at Donovan. "You don't like people who exaggerate about you, do you?"

Donovan glanced at her and continued driving. "Depends on the person."

"What about what I said today..." Chloe felt like she went too far. She may have touched his "dislike of flattery" boundary, so she wanted to ask if she had crossed a line and would tone down her flamboyant language in the future.

"What did you say?" Donovan seemed clueless, frowning slightly as he looked at Chloe.

"I said... that I love you. Do you find it distasteful?" Chloe blushed slightly and said it again.

"Admitting that you're flattering me?" Donovan asked, slightly disappointed in his expression.

"I..."

Chloe suddenly realized that she had fallen into his trap again and had been deceived by him. "Loving him" was just flattering words.

She had nothing to say and could only turn her head towards the window to alleviate her embarrassment.

"How much?"

"What?" Chloe asked.

"How much sincerity?"

Chloe thought for a moment. He had just agreed to her request for leave, which was pretty good.

If she said something he didn't want to hear, it would hurt him. So Chloe said, "Ten out of ten, completely sincere."

"Ten out of ten?" Donovan toyed with these words. "If it was out of twelve, would you give twelve?"

"Of course. The highest score," Chloe said.

Chloe waited for a long time, but she did not see him respond, so she leaned back in the back seat and fell asleep.

Donovan, however, knew very well that if "loving you" was flattery, then "ten out of ten" was even more so.

On Saturday, before Chloe went to see her mother, she specifically picked out her most shabby clothes. She usually didn't wear makeup, so she washed her face, applied some moisturizer, carried her canvas bag, and even wore the blue light-blocking glasses she used to wear in school.

She stood in front of Donovan and adjusted her glasses. "Is this shabby?"

Donovan was sitting on the sofa reading a book. When Chloe asked like this, he put down the book and looked Chloe up and down.

"Not shabby, very adorable," Donovan said.

Donovan was telling the truth. Chloe already had a small face, and when she wore black-framed glasses, her face looked even smaller.

"Ah?" Chloe panicked and went upstairs to find even shabbier clothes. She changed out of her mediocre sportswear and put on her school uniform from when she was a student.

Carrying a big backpack, she walked in front of Donovan.

"Is this shabby?" she asked Donovan again.

Donovan was already wrinkling his brows. "Not shabby! Let me emphasize this to Mrs. Donovan. Her ideas are really beautiful!"

"This has nothing to do with her!" Chloe said. "You... if you fire her, I'll be angry with you."

After speaking, Chloe carried her canvas bag and left.
