Chapter 676 Teased by Him
"What's up?" Chloe, already half-asleep, heard Donovan's message alert and couldn't help but ask, feeling a bit distracted and on the verge of dozing off again.
"It's about Charles' bidding."
"Okay," Chloe mumbled and fell back asleep.
The next day was Saturday. Chloe slept in until noon, and Donovan told her he was taking the kids to the ice rink.
After lunch, Chloe and Maya took a car to the rink.
This ice rink was newly built inside a mall, and the prices were pretty steep, so there weren't many people. Donovan had already hired a coach to teach the kids how to skate for an hour.
Chloe and Maya waited outside the rink.
Feeling a bit bored from waiting, Chloe went downstairs to check out the clothing stores until Maya called her.
Chloe checked the time; only half an hour had passed. She wondered why Maya was calling her now.
"Chloe, come quick, something happened to the kids. The chandelier on the ceiling wasn't installed properly and fell on someone." Maya's voice was urgent.
Chloe's heart tightened, her legs trembling, unable to stand still. She collapsed onto a nearby bench, "I'm coming right away."
Chloe struggled to stand up, and a sales associate helped her up, "Miss, are you okay?"
Chloe's face was pale, and she felt dizzy, "I'm fine."
She hurried to the ice rink and saw a crowd gathered around. Chloe squeezed through the crowd, and the ice rink manager was apologizing to her, saying they had already called for an ambulance. Chloe saw Jake lying in Maya's arms, and her heart relaxed a bit. Francis was standing next to them, unharmed but very anxious, constantly nudging Jake, "Jake, Jake, are you okay?"
Jake's forehead was covered in blood, some of it already scabbed. Last time, his head was injured by someone, and now it was hit again. Chloe felt a pang of pain in her heart for him.
She took Jake from Maya's arms and gently said, "Are you okay, Jake?"
Jake woke up, smiled, and said, "Mom, I'm fine, don't worry."
Chloe felt that this child was getting better and better. Because he was hurt, Chloe felt a pang of guilt, and she also regretted feeling relieved that it was him and not Francis who got hurt.
She held Jake even closer.
The ice rink manager saw Chloe and apologized sincerely, "Mrs. Baker, I'm very sorry this happened. We've already called for an ambulance and are holding the construction company accountable. Let's go see the doctor first. We can discuss compensation later."
The paramedics arrived, and Chloe got into the ambulance.
On the way, she called Donovan, who said he would come right away.
At the hospital, the doctor applied medication and bandaged Jake, following the same procedure as last time when he was injured at preschool.
Donovan came in and glanced at Jake.
Jake was awake and smiled, "Dad."
"Just lie down and rest," Donovan said, sitting by Jake's bedside.
"Mr. Blake, Chloe, the ice rink's legal department is here to discuss compensation," Maya said as she entered the room.
"Will you go?" Chloe asked Donovan.
"You go ahead. You're just as capable of negotiating, and women are better at getting money than men," Donovan teased.
Chloe was left speechless by Donovan's remark.
