Chapter 228 Divorce

Donovan disregarded it all and forcefully slapped Chloe's face multiple times.

Chloe, who was fast asleep, mumbled, "What's happening?"

She woke up to find Donovan standing by her bedside.

"How did you get in?" Chloe asked.

"Kenneth is in the hospital. You're coming with me," Donovan said grimly.

Chloe had been unable to sleep all night and felt groggy. However, upon hearing the news, she quickly rose from bed and changed her clothes without bothering to brush her teeth or wash her face.

Kenneth had previously mentioned that cancer was untreatable and had avoided seeking medical help to maintain his dignity. Now that he was hospitalized, the outlook seemed bleak.

"How is Kenneth?" In the car, Chloe couldn't help but cry, asking Donovan.

"You've been waiting for this day, haven't you?" Donovan hadn't smiled recently, always looking grim.

"I haven't! I don't want anything to happen to Kenneth, and I'm not like you." Chloe retorted.

She may not have been fond of Donovan, but she held a favorable opinion of Kenneth.

Donovan turned to gaze out the window, while Kenneth was being treated in the top hospital ward.

Upon Chloe's arrival at the hospital, she spotted Paisley in the corridor. As soon as Donovan showed up, she instinctively linked arms with him.

Chloe pretended not to notice.

"You see, what's the use of having her at home? Maya can't even wake her up," Paisley said.
Donovan likely informed Paisley about Chloe's role in the Blake family.

Chloe's guilt deepened as a result. Maya had tried calling her earlier, but Chloe was still asleep.

"Doctor, I want to see Kenneth." Chloe grabbed the hand of the doctor coming out of the ward.

"Let Mrs. Blake in to see Kenneth." the doctor said.

"Thanks." With that, Chloe quickly entered Kenneth's room.

When she saw the frail old man in the hospital bed, Chloe couldn't help but cry, calling out, "Kenneth, Kenneth."

After a while, Kenneth opened his eyes.

"Chloe." He was very weak.

"Kenneth." Chloe grabbed Kenneth's dry hand.

Kenneth smiled and said, "Chloe, I know. You and Donovan are putting on a show for me. I..."

Kenneth coughed again.

"Don't talk." Chloe stroked Kenneth's chest, comforting him.

"I'm aware of everything. When you and Donovan returned, there was a noticeable lack of communication in the living room. It felt forced. When Sandra and I got married, we couldn't stand to be apart for even a day. Kenneth was really fond of you and tried to set you up with Donovan. I even had Donovan adjust the property distribution, hoping for a genuine marriage between you two. I saw improvements in your relationship, but then something unfortunate happened to Amelia. I knew it was Gordon and Donovan's fault. Chloe, your love for Amelia is evident, and you must not forgive Donovan. I'm pleading with you, can you find it in your heart to forgive Donovan?" Kenneth gently held Chloe's hand.

Chloe was in tears.

She had intended to put on a show with Donovan, but they hadn't done it well, and Kenneth had seen through them.

Kenneth had been cooperating with them all along.

"Alright." Kenneth managed to finish speaking before fainting.

Chloe stayed with Kenneth for some time before eventually leaving. In the corridor, she continued to cry. Over the course of a year spent with Kenneth, he had shown her great kindness.

Despite not being a true member of the Blake family, he always treated her as one. Lost in her sorrow, Chloe didn't realize Paisley and Donovan nearby. \

Three days later, on a cold, sunless day, Kenneth passed away.

Chloe had recently said goodbye to Amelia and Kenneth, feeling like there was no one left in her life to hold onto.

Throughout the process, Paisley had been by her side.

With Kenneth gone, the house became even emptier, with only Donovan, Maya, and a few cleaners left.

Chloe couldn't bear the loneliness and emptiness. She only felt sad here.

She wanted to leave Maple Valley quickly, fearing changes would happen and that Donovan didn't want to divorce her.

She knocked on Donovan's room door.

Donovan was sitting on the sofa smoking, the smoke enveloping his face.

"Are you here for the divorce papers?" he asked, his voice dangerously low, squinting at Chloe.

"We agreed to marry Mr. Blake for this reason in the first place. You shouldn't go back on your word," Chloe said, looking up.

"Of course." With that, Donovan took the divorce papers from the side.

Chloe opened them, then sighed deeply.

Seeing her relaxed demeanor, Donovan understood.

"The two million dollars for you will be in your account soon," Donovan said.

"I don't want it! That's enough. I'm leaving tomorrow." With that, Chloe turned and left.
