Chapter 347 She Felt Uneasy

Clara was always so thoughtful and genuine. Most people would be super grateful to have a mother-in-law like her.

Chloe wanted to be grateful, too, but every time she saw Gordon, she thought of her own mom, Amelia. If Amelia were still around, Chloe would have someone to talk to and wouldn't be stuck in this mess.

"What are you doing here?" Donovan's stern voice echoed from the stairs.

Chloe turned to see Donovan, his lips pressed into a tight line. He was furious.

"Donovan, your father and I heard you had a child, so we thought we should come and see," Clara said, looking pitiful. "Where's the child?"

"The child's asleep. You should go to your room and rest," Donovan replied, then turned to Chloe. "You, go upstairs."

Chloe didn't say a word.

Upstairs she could hear rustling noises from downstairs.

When Donovan finally came to bed, Chloe turned over and nestled into his arms, seeking comfort. But she couldn't shake the thought that while Gordon was the culprit, Donovan had helped cover it up.

Feeling uneasy, she tried to pull away, but Donovan held her down.

"I didn't ask them to come!" Donovan growled.

"I know! Did I say anything?" Chloe shot back, staring at him.

Donovan's eyes were sharp as if he could solve anything. But he couldn't fix the conflict in Chloe's heart.

That night, Chloe wanted to stay far away from him, but he held her tightly, refusing to let go.

She wanted to ask when Gordon and Clara would leave. Seeing Gordon made her extremely uncomfortable. But Clara had done nothing wrong and was a good mother-in-law. Besides, they had just arrived, and asking when they'd leave would be too much for Donovan.

So, Chloe kept quiet.

The next morning, before Chloe woke up, Clara knocked on the door and came in.

"Chloe, I made some soup for you. Try it," Clara said, incredibly attentive.

"Thank you, Mom," Chloe replied and started drinking.

Since Gordon arrived, Chloe hadn't gone downstairs all day and hadn't seen Francis either.

Clara's meticulous care made her uneasy, anxious, and even a bit breathless. She felt her attitude towards Gordon was too harsh.

A week passed, and they showed no signs of leaving as if they intended to stay indefinitely.

One day, Clara was bringing soup upstairs and accidentally bumped into the steps. The hot soup scalded Clara's wrist, causing severe swelling, and she even hit her head. But she kept saying, "It's okay, it's okay, it was my fault."

Chloe knew Clara was atoning for Gordon's sins. The more excellent Gordon's crime, the more effort Clara put into atoning, ultimately showing a "willing to sacrifice everything for Chloe, willing to endure hardship" attitude.

This made Chloe feel increasingly uncomfortable and tormented.

After all, it wasn't Clara who committed the crime. It was Gordon.

Although Chloe felt that Clara was manipulating her sense of morality or conscience to get her to forgive Gordon, she didn't refuse, did she?

Moreover, they behaved impeccably at home, never touching Francis without Chloe's permission, being particularly cautious. Even if Chloe felt uncomfortable, she had no excuse to vent.

They were Donovan's parents, and even if Donovan wanted to get angry, he had no reason to.

Chloe stayed at home all day, feeling extremely bored and wishing someone would come to see her.

Fortunately, one day, Ann came. She brought Chloe lots of delicious food and fun things and wanted to take Chloe to go shopping.

Chloe was, of course, delighted.
