Chapter 218 The Last Straw That Crushed Chloe
Donovan pushed Chloe down. Just as he was about to unleash his anger, Chloe snatched a fruit knife from the bedside.
She held the blade against Donovan's throat, causing his expression to shift into a complex gaze fixed on her.
"Don't touch me!" Chloe said, tears streaming down her face.
Whether Amelia was murdered by Donovan or not, the incident was connected to him. Despite this, he still had the audacity to want her to carry his child. It was quite bold of him, considering they should be enemies. Donovan casually pushed the knife aside with his finger and remarked, "I'm not in a good mood either.”
" You've taken a life; it's understandable that you're not in a good mood! But that doesn't bring back what I've lost!" Chloe yelled. She recalled the moment when Amelia had regained consciousness. Chloe had knelt beside her, repeatedly calling her 'mom' in the hopes of a response. However, the room now felt desolate and devoid of warmth.
Amelia was gone, never to answer her again.
Chloe cried, and as she cried, she fell asleep.
Donovan held her as she cried all night.
The next day, when she woke up with swollen eyes from crying, she knew Donovan was still in bed.
"Don't keep staring at me like I'm a criminal all the time. I'm fine, I won't die," Chloe said to Donovan.
Donovan scrutinized Chloe for a moment, considering the truth in her words.
"You stay put. I'll go to the office and be back," Donovan said.
After Donovan departed, Chloe meticulously cleaned and organized the items that Amelia had used, neatly folding her clothes and stowing them away in the wardrobe. Barbara's message arrived at noon.
Barbara: [Chloe, are you free? Can we talk?]
Once Donovan left, Chloe diligently cleaned and arranged Amelia's belongings, carefully folding her clothes and storing them in the wardrobe. Barbara's message came in at noon.
Chloe: [Sure, I'm at home.]
When Barbara arrived, she stood in front of Amelia's portrait in silence for a moment.
"Chloe, we never expected Amelia to leave us so suddenly. I messaged you on WhatsApp, but you didn't reply," Barbara said.
Donovan had already deleted that WhatsApp message for Chloe.
Chloe had been mopping the floor the whole time, seemingly tireless like a robot.
"You think something's fishy about Amelia's death, right?" Barbara added.
Chloe's hand paused while mopping the floor.
She had a gut feeling that something wasn't right. While Donovan confessed to the crime, she couldn't dismiss the possibility that it was said in anger. After all, Chloe lacked any concrete evidence.
"Take a look at this!" Barbara took out her phone and opened the photo album.
Chloe saw many people in the photos, in what seemed like a chaotic environment.
"This is where Jacob gambles at Elysium Haven. Do you see him?" Barbara said, then pointed to someone beside him, "Do you see this person next to him?"
Chloe had always been wary of Barbara's intentions, believing that she was trying to set a trap for her. As a result, she took precautions to avoid falling into it.
"Let me show you a video." With that, she played a video.
In the video, Donovan was yelling at a project manager and even threw something at the person's face.
"The same person!" Chloe was puzzled.
"Yes, Paisley had previously sent you this video, but you didn't watch it. The project manager is extremely loyal to Donovan and also an expert in gambling. Jacob lost his house to him, and now, it's likely back in Donovan's hands. Barbara remarked, "So, it was actually Donovan plotting against Jacob."
Both Barbara and Paisley were certain that Amelia's death was no accident. Chloe and Donovan's strained relationship had reached a breaking point, and they seized upon Jacob's situation as the tipping point to push Chloe over the edge.
"Are you just realizing this now? I knew it long ago." Chloe forced a smile, "Jacob was insatiable, and both Amelia and I strongly opposed it. Your information came too late."
"Really?" Barbara carefully studied Chloe's expression.
Barbara could tell that Chloe had just found out, but she didn't want to show it to her.
"Of course it's true," Chloe said, lifting her head, "So you better stay out of my affairs with him."
"Chloe!" Barbara said angrily, "Ungrateful."
With that, Barbara left.
