Chapter 134 I Woke Up to The Sound of My Name Being Called. Chloe, My Mom Was Awake
At the end of the workday, Donovan's car was parked in front of the New East Building. He called Chloe and waited for her downstairs. Once she got in the car, Donovan handed her back her phone, showing an incoming call from Riley.
"What does Riley want?" Chloe asked, her heart racing with worry about Amelia.
"She said your mom is awake and wants to talk to you," Donovan replied.
"Amelia can move her fingers?" Chloe's excitement was palpable. "Does this mean she's waking up?" She seemed lost in her own joy.
"Is that so?" Donovan couldn't fully share Chloe's excitement.
Chloe called Riley back. "Amelia is awake and can talk. Hurry over," Riley said.
Chloe was momentarily stunned, unable to believe the news. Tears streamed down her face, unbeknownst to her. "I'll be right there," she managed to say. After the call, Chloe sat in silence for a while, afraid it was all a dream. After all, six years was a long time.
"Do you have time? Can you take me to the hospital in Maple Valley?" Chloe asked, her voice trembling.
"Sure," Donovan replied, and the car headed toward the hospital. Chloe was filled with emotions throughout the journey.
When they arrived at the hospital, Donovan was about to get out when Chloe suddenly stopped him, saying, "Can you not come in?"
"Why? Is there something I shouldn't know?" Donovan teased.
"It's just that the hospital environment... it's better if you don't come. It's not polite for Amelia to see you as soon as she wakes up, and I have a lot to explain. Is that okay?" Chloe pleaded.
"Alright," Donovan said, taking out a cigarette and lighting it. Last time, Chloe used the same excuse. Donovan didn't pay much attention then, but now he knew she was afraid Amelia would reveal the truth.
Chloe hurried to the neurology department. After calling out "Amelia" at the door, tears welled up in her eyes.
"Chloe?" Amelia's tears also fell onto the pillow.
Chloe threw herself onto Amelia, "Mom, you're awake? I can't believe it, it's been six years..."
Amelia patted Chloe's back, "Chloe, you're still the same, always crying. I can't recognize you now. You were still in high school, and now... Riley just told me that six years have passed." Amelia knew nothing about Chloe's current life.
Chloe's tears flowed even more. Amelia still called her "Chloe." Finally, apart from her grandfather, there was another person in this world who called her "Chloe." Chloe was overwhelmed with emotions.
After calming down, Chloe sat by her mother's bed and caught up with her. Riley tactfully left; after all, this was a family matter.
"What has Jacob been up to?" Amelia asked.
"Jacob is working as a driver, and he's doing well. He often came to see you while you were sick," Chloe said, wiping her tears.
Amelia knew her son well and gave a bitter smile, "Him? He probably wished I died early. If I died, he wouldn't have to pay for my medical expenses. And you, Chloe, what do you do for a living?" Amelia held Chloe's hand tightly.
Chloe was excited. She had held her mother's hand countless times, always feeling lonely, but now she felt a response. "I work as an auditor in a group company, and I'm studying to become a certified public accountant. I'll pass the exam next year," Chloe said proudly.
"Chloe is a good girl," Amelia said gently, patting Chloe's head. "By the way, the hospital expenses are quite high. Where did the money come from? Riley told me that the nursing care costs ten thousand a month."
"Well..." Chloe hesitated for a moment. "The real estate company where Dad worked compensated us with several hundred thousand, and the person who hit you also gave tens of thousands. It's almost enough."
Amelia shook her head, "It's still not enough."
Chloe couldn't hide it and said, "Mom, do you remember Donovan?"
"I do," Amelia had just seen him, how could she forget?
"I married him. He's rich, and he's the one paying for your medical expenses. Also, he doesn't know about the eye situation, and I haven't told him. Can you keep it from him, too? I don't want him to feel indebted to me."
Chloe couldn't hide it, and now that Amelia was awake, she would definitely know that Chloe was already married.
Chloe didn't mention the "agreement." She was afraid that Amelia would feel sorry for her when she knew that Chloe was in a difficult situation for money.
Amelia tucked Chloe's hair behind her ear and realized that it was too late; she had already told Donovan about this. She was uneasy, not knowing where her daughter's marriage would lead.
