Chapter 143 Who Had the Upper Hand?
I found herself at a crossroads, unsure of the path ahead.
Jacob's car arrived within ten minutes. Brayden got out and helped Chloe's grandfather into the car. Once inside, Chloe called Donovan, and this time he answered. "Miss me?" Donovan teased.
"Grandpa's sick. I'm on my way to the hospital, the one you arranged for him. Hurry," Chloe urged.
Donovan's tone turned serious. "I'm on my way."
After the three of them arrived at the hospital, the doctor asked them to wait outside while they examined her grandfather.
Chloe paced nervously in the corridor. Brayden went to handle the paperwork. Jacob sat, waiting for Donovan, eager to show him what he had done.
Donovan appeared in a hurry, and Chloe rushed to him. "Grandpa seems to have had a heart problem. The doctors are performing CPR," she explained.
"How?" Donovan's face turned cold as he noticed Brayden and Jacob behind her. It was clear they had brought Chloe and her grandfather. Despite his anger, he had to control himself.
"I don't know. Grandpa's heart condition isn't severe. Why now?" Chloe was puzzled and afraid Donovan would blame her for not taking care of her grandfather. "It's my fault. I didn't take good care of him."
Donovan sat on a bench in the corridor, with Brayden by his side, holding Chloe's hand. The doctor came out.
"How is he?" Donovan asked immediately.
"You can go in. Oh, and he only wants you," the doctor said, motioning toward Donovan.
Donovan informed Chloe before entering her grandfather's room. Her grandfather looked well, not even on an IV. "How are you, Grandpa?" Donovan asked, taking a seat.
Grandpa opened his hand, revealing a capsule. "Do you know this medicine?" he asked.
"Yes, it's the one you often take," Donovan replied.
"Open it and see how what’s different this capsule compared to my usual dosage," Grandpa said, handing Donovan another pill for comparison. Donovan opened it and saw it was three times the usual amount.
“This medicine is for heart failure. You know that an overdose can be fatal. Even if I die, there won’t be any other cause of death in my body, and it won’t be suspected as a murder. Do you know who gave me these pills?” Grandpa asked. Donovan's brow furrowed: Paisley.
"There's a reason why I don't like her. Since she wanted to see this result, I'll give it to her. Only you know what she wants to achieve through this. She might have also made Chloe's phone unable to call for help, and deliberately kept your phone busy. If I died, Chloe would have an unexplainable responsibility. Thankfully, this time, Chloe managed to control the situation. Otherwise, the consequences would be unimaginable. Fortunately, Grandpa was cautious. This move can even be described as insidious."
Donovan looked at Grandpa, thinking: Did Grandpa already know about the arranged marriage? Did he just use this to force Donovan to withdraw from the agreement? What Paisley wanted was for his agreement with Chloe to expire once Grandpa is gone. Then, they could get divorced.
"I'm glad you're okay, Grandpa."
"Donovan, I've read books and walked through life. Don't think you can deceive me," Grandpa said, closing his eyes to rest.
After Donovan left, Chloe anxiously grabbed his arm. "Is Grandpa okay?" she asked.
"He's fine. Don't worry." Donovan's tone toward Chloe was gentle, considering she had almost fallen into Paisley's scheme.
"That's good." Chloe finally felt relieved, letting out a long sigh.
"Is your grandfather okay, Donovan?" Jacob asked as he approached.
"He's fine. Don't worry." Donovan's gaze shifted to Brayden, his expression complex.
"Mr. Blake, let's go," Brayden said, patting Jacob's shoulder, and they left.
