Barbara had never met anyone as handsome and considerate as Jeffery. She sipped her coffee, feeling pretty pleased.
She kind of knew, but also kind of didn't, that Jeffery was only so nice to her because she was Chloe's cousin. Jeffery had buried his feelings deep down. He'd given up on chasing Chloe, which was why he treated Barbara so well.
"I'm in a bad mood today. The play at Pearl Peak University is over. There's this show called 'Queen,' and I lost the lead role. I don't even want to play the supporting role. This show's gonna be huge, for sure," Barbara said.
She talked like she had been offered the supporting role but turned it down.
"A life with ups and downs is a real life. A smooth life is boring," Jeffery said, thinking about his own experience of being rejected by Chloe. The awkwardness of not knowing Chloe's ex-husband was Donovan still hung around.
Barbara perked up. "You're right."
Her eyes crinkled into a smile.
Just then, Sofia showed up with Loren. She immediately spotted Barbara and thought, 'Why is Barbara at Chloe's school? Chloe told me to come last night, so I got up early, but she hasn't said anything since. I was just wandering around the campus with Loren and bumped into Barbara.'
Barbara didn't notice Sofia, happily chatting with Jeffery as they walked past her.
Last night, when Chloe replied to Sofia, it was already past one in the morning. Sofia figured Chloe had slept late, so she didn't call her in the morning and just came over. Now it was past ten, and Chloe still hadn't contacted her, so Sofia called Chloe. "Chloe, where are you?"
Chloe answered groggily, "You're here?"
"Yeah, I'm on your campus. Time for you to treat me to lunch," Sofia said.
"Well, there's a big garden on campus. Do you see it? Can you wait for me there?" Chloe said, rubbing her hair.
"How long will you be?" Sofia asked.
"Just wait a bit," Chloe said. "You guys can walk around the campus first. It might take me a while to get there."
"Where did you go?" Sofia asked.
"I'll tell you later."
After hanging up, Sofia got a message from Logan: [I heard Mr. Blake is also in Pearl Peak City. When Chloe treats you to lunch, invite Mr. Blake too, to help improve their relationship.]
Sofia: [Okay.]
Sofia stood in the campus garden and sent a message to Donovan: [Mr. Blake, Logan said you're in Pearl Peak City. I'm here too. Chloe is treating me to lunch. If you're free, join us.]
Sofia wasn't Donovan's subordinate anymore, so she wasn't as scared of him and spoke more freely.
Donovan didn't reply.
After hanging up, Chloe hurried to the school. On campus, she saw Loren and Sofia. Maybe because she had Francis, Chloe felt a warm affection for Loren, someone about the same age as her son.
"Hi, Godmother," Loren said, smiling with eyes almost closed.
"Hi, I'm happy to see you," Chloe said, almost forgetting she was Loren's Godmother if he hadn't mentioned it.
"By the way, Chloe, Logan said Mr. Blake is also in Pearl Peak City recently. Let's invite him to lunch too. After all, he was my boss," Sofia said.
Chloe's face immediately darkened. "Why invite him? Isn't it good with just the three of us?"
"Logan said so. It's rude not to invite him when I rarely come to Pearl Peak City. Logan still relies on him for work," Sofia pleaded with Chloe.
"Alright," Chloe reluctantly agreed. She didn't feel comfortable with Donovan around, but for Sofia and Logan's sake, she sent Donovan a message: [Sofia is visiting me. I'm treating her to lunch. Would you like to join?]
Chloe hoped he was busy and wouldn't come, but to her surprise, he replied: [Address.]
