Chapter 72: My Future Husband
Donovan chatted with his grandfather downstairs for a couple of minutes.
As he was preparing to go upstairs and walked by the coffee table, he accidentally bumped into Chloe's bag.
Chloe's bag, which was already sliding on the edge of the coffee table, fell on the ground when Donovan bumped into it and a book opened up with the inscription, "Wishing you the early realization of your life goals. Brayden."
Instantly, Donovan's face darkened. Brayden's handwriting was flamboyant and there was a date and an address on it - last Saturday and Heaven Street Bookstore.
Chloe had read over a hundred pages of the book and folded a corner at the spot she left off.
In just two days, she had diligently read over a hundred pages. Quite a dedicated reader!
There was also a notebook on cost management that belonged to Brayden. It was filled with dense notes. Another textbook had the Heaven Street Bookstore's seal on it.
So, during those few days she didn't come back while they were having a disagreement, where exactly did Chloe go?
With a gloomy face, Donovan placed the three books back exactly where they were and went upstairs.
It turns out Chloe's resignation application wasn't baseless. He had said she wasn't an impulsive person.
Indeed, she wasn't! It had been a carefully considered decision.
"You came up?" Chloe asked when she saw him, her tone somewhat indifferent, but her expression a bit nostalgic, like that of a sweet little girl.
"I haven't answered the question yet. Who is it that made your heart flutter?" Donovan said, leaning back on the couch and closing his eyes to rest.
"It's definitely not you!" Chloe replied in the same tone, playfully annoyed.
"I know it's not me!" Donovan casually said, "After all, it's just a marriage of convenience. I don't mind."
Hearing his words, Chloe couldn't help but feel her heart sink a little.
"As long as you know! Where am I supposed to sleep tonight?" Chloe looked at him sideways. He was lying on the chaise lounge, embodying the calmness of a mature man and the unwavering authority of someone in a higher position. It deeply fascinated Chloe. "I'm planning on going back to my dorm room later."
"Since you're back, you naturally sleep in the bedroom. Are you planning to go sleep with some other man?" Donovan's tone was indifferent, with a hint of coldness and mockery.
Chloe made a sound of agreement.
She also knew that if she slept in the bedroom, she wouldn't have a peaceful night. And sure enough, bruises covered her body the next morning. She couldn't help but complain in a coquettish tone, "You hurt me."
"Who wouldn't feel pain?" Donovan's voice was cold.
Chloe remembered the words he had said about "contractual marriage" today, and combined with his belief in Paisley's provocation, even though they had made up this time, Chloe still had grievances in her heart. She retaliated by saying, "My future husband."
"Oh? Is that so? Who is your future husband?" Donovan started laughing again, a laugh that made Chloe feel a chilling coldness as if it were the coldest winter. Chloe felt a shiver run down her spine.
Donovan's attitude was a bit strange, but Chloe thought that everything was fine downstairs just a while ago, so it couldn't have changed so quickly. If that were the case, he really was unpredictable, but Chloe thought she might be overthinking.
"I am ignoring you. I'm going to bed," Chloe said and turned around to sleep.
The next day, when Chloe went downstairs, she saw that Maya had already packed her bag for her. She was surprised and asked Maya, "Aunt, you didn't touch anything in my bag, right?"
Maya replied, "Madam, your bag was about to fall to the ground. I didn't touch it. How could I have placed it neatly on the coffee table?"
Knowing that her bag was still in the same state as last night, Chloe felt relieved.
All of these small actions were observed by Donovan.
After getting in the car, Chloe held her bag tightly in her hands.
While waiting at a red light, Donovan casually glanced at her and mockingly asked, "What's in your bag? Are you afraid I'll steal it?"
"Treasures. Of course, I'm afraid you'll steal them!" Chloe casually replied.
They really were treasures!
Treasures that Donovan wished he could crush!
