Chapter 342 The Renowned Noble

Susan showed up the next day, apologizing non-stop, saying she shouldn't have left.

Chloe smiled and reassured her, "You can't predict the future, and neither can I."

Susan held up an old songbook. "This is my old songbook from way back. I found it yesterday and it's been in the car since."

Susan had actually come by the day before, but Chloe was too weak and asleep, so they missed each other. Susan hadn't planned on giving Chloe the songbook, thinking she wouldn't be interested right after giving birth. She had brought some health supplements and homemade food instead. But Donovan suggested that since Chloe was in poor health and might feel worse after learning the baby girl didn't survive, Susan should bring the songbook to distract her.

Talking about other people was always a good distraction.

"Is this Pamela?" Chloe asked, looking at the yellowed stickers in Susan's songbook. Despite the years, it was clear Pamela was a natural beauty back then.

Donovan noticed Chloe was fully engaged in discussing Pamela, which gave him some temporary relief.

"She was a great beauty back in the day. One of the top beauties," Susan said, recalling Pamela's past. "She was a Capricorn, her father studied abroad, and later the whole family moved overseas. Her family had been renowned nobles for generations, so naturally, she had a great demeanor."

Chloe smiled, surprised that Susan knew about her noble lineage. If this were today, she would be the original fan.

"Pamela had a male partner named Fred Roberts back then. They were a perfect match," Susan's eyes lit up as she talked about her idol.

Chloe carefully looked at the old photos of the beautiful Pamela.

"She had a small mole behind her ear," Chloe said, pointing to a profile picture of Pamela.

"Yes, she did," Susan responded.

After a while, Chloe got tired, and Susan left.

After giving birth, Chloe's energy was significantly depleted, and the doctor came to check on her every day. But since she was young, she was slowly recovering.

In the past few days, Donovan had gone to the office three times, each time leaving in a hurry and coming back just as quickly.

Everyone at the office knew that Chloe had given birth and Donovan had an heir.

But every time Donovan came to the office, there was no smile on his face.

Charles had asked him about the baby, and Donovan told him the truth.

"Have you told Chloe?" Charles asked, frowning slightly.

"No."

"Why not?"

"She's not fully recovered yet, and I don't want to make things worse. Besides," Donovan flicked some ash from his cigarette. "she really liked that baby girl."

"Aren't you afraid that if you tell her later, she'll be even angrier and unable to handle it? A child is a mother's treasure. She might come after you."

"I'll deal with it when the time comes."

Chloe had described to Donovan many times how she would dress up the girl, braid her hair, put her in floral dresses, go shopping together, and watch her date.

Donovan had wanted to tell her several times but always stopped short.

One day, Jane came to see Chloe.

Jane wasn't as cheerful as Chloe had imagined.

Chloe had a bad feeling and kept insisting on seeing the baby.

The baby had been in the incubator for nine days, and tomorrow was the day she would finally get to hold him and see him.

"Chloe, calm down!" Donovan growled.

"Calm? Just tell me, what happened to the baby?" Chloe looked at Donovan pitifully.

Jane, being a doctor, had never been in favor of keeping it a secret.

She helped Chloe sit on the bed.

"Chloe, listen to me. You were in a bad mood before, and the baby girl was underdeveloped and lethargic in the womb. Her nutrition was taken by her brother, creating a vicious cycle. Plus, her brother was born first and wasn't full-term. She suffocated in the womb," Jane carefully chose her words. "She didn't make it."

Chloe stared blankly, touching her belly. "But I... I have a scar. Isn't that from a C-section?"

Rather than trying to convince Jane, it seemed Chloe was trying to convince herself.

Jane glanced at Donovan, who was standing by the window.

"Mr. Blake didn't tell you because you were in poor health, and he meant well."

Chloe didn't say a word, tears streaming down her face.

Her mind was blank.
