Chapter 63: Tugs at the Heartstrings
Donovan was changing clothes in the bedroom. He glanced at the pregnancy test and the B-scanned document on the table. They looked authentic. His thoughts drifted away for a moment.
Chloe entered the room, her expression not as exaggerated and petulant as it was downstairs. She seemed tired, and as soon as she entered, she lay down on the bed, sighing after passing through the difficult situation just now.
However, there was still a more important hurdle to overcome: now that she was "pregnant," how could she successfully "terminate" the pregnancy? It was a problem.
Chloe muttered to herself, "Thank goodness grandpa didn't suspect anything. I was afraid that he would be heartbroken."
"Do you really think you're pregnant?" he asked Chloe, his voice serious and calm as usual.
"Huh?" Chloe opened her eyes and looked at Donovan, who was five steps away from her. "Why are you asking this? Whether I'm pregnant or not, don't you know?"
Donovan always used protection, and what she meant by "knowing" was probably that.
He also knew that it was very easy for her to find someone to issue a fake pregnancy test.
But for the first time, Donovan felt a glimmer of hope. What if?
After all, condoms were not 100% effective.
"Who issued the test for you?" Donovan understood her implication of "not being pregnant," and he felt somewhat upset.
"My classmate Jane. She, Sofia, and I, we're like the three musketeers of friendship," Chloe said.
"Oh?" Donovan looked at Chloe, who seemed relieved, and felt a bit unhappy. "Three musketeers? Which one are you?"
"It's me," Chloe's eyes lit up as she talked about it, as if she was reminiscing about her school days. "I'm the sharpest angle."
She even used her hand to measure a triangle.
"I see. Tugs at the heartstrings," Donovan said.
"Huh?" Chloe didn't quite understand what he meant.
Chloe felt that Donovan's attitude was not very good and thought to herself: It's Grandfather's birthday today, and we finally got through a hurdle. Shouldn't he be happy? Why is he so unpredictable, just like the weather in June?
"Why are you mad at me again?" Chloe felt a bit wronged. "Is it because my brother is here and you are not happy? It wasn't me who told my brother about the arranged marriage, he figured it out himself. I told him, isn't it his own fault? Once I tell someone else, the agreement will be over, what benefits do I get from that?"
Donovan didn't say anything.
But in the evening, he passionately made love to Chloe.
Chloe's tears were rolling as she asked, "What do you mean? Is it because I mentioned being pregnant and it hurt Paisley's heart, so you feel sorry?"
"I do feel sorry! But not for that."
"Then what do you feel sorry for?" Chloe thought to herself: In any case, it's not for me.
Donovan seemed to lose his mind to desire, he didn't answer and kept kissing Chloe's neck.
On Monday, everyone in the company was spreading rumors about Chloe's pregnancy.
When she went to the pantry to pour coffee, her colleagues carefully advised her, "Chloe, coffee is not good for your health. Switch to milk or plain water."
When Chloe returned to her seat, she found that someone had placed a new, thick "cushion" on her chair.
No one dared to get close to Chloe, afraid of accidentally touching her and causing an accident.
Chloe was very surprised.
Only Sofia knew about this. Chloe messaged Sofia on WhatsApp, asking, "Did you tell everyone in the company about this?"
"No, my colleague asked me where I was last Sunday, and I said I went to deliver something to you. She was surprised and said, 'You went to Mr. Blake's house? What did you deliver?' When I saw Paisley at your house that day, I just said I was delivering your pregnancy test results. If Paisley continues to bother Mr. Blake, everyone in the company will know that she is destroying someone else's family. If Mr. Blake dares to make a move, it would be cheating within his marriage. It would expose them on the internet. Quick, praise me, did I do a good job?"
"You're such a blabbermouth," Chloe replied.
"I'm not, my colleague is."
Chloe: ....
Sofia also knew that Chloe's pregnancy was a lie. With such a big fuss, how did Sofia put Chloe in this situation? Over time, if Chloe's belly doesn't start showing, they would definitely say that Chloe faked the pregnancy to gain favor, and she would be exposed, not Paisley.
Chloe felt troubled and thought to herself: How can I explain myself when that happens? Wouldn't I be a big liar?
Now, it seemed like the people in the company were trying to please her, but in reality, they were trying to please Donovan's "child", or more accurately, they were indirectly pleasing Donovan.
Chloe understood very well.
She told Jacob the truth: a marriage agreement would burden her with a child, and she still had her youth ahead of her. She planned to become a certified public accountant in the future, so how could she get married? How could she find a job?
Furthermore, Chloe felt that Donovan was indifferent to this matter and would definitely not help her find a way to get rid of the baby.
The director of the training department sent a notification: "Starting next Monday, the 'New East Group Star' training, held every Friday, will be taught by Mr. Blake. Everyone should submit the homework assigned by Mr. Blake in the group."
Sofia sent another WhatsApp message to Chloe: "It's Mr. Blake again in your class."
Chloe frowned slightly and thought to herself, "He's teaching all day, isn't he tired?"
One by one, the twenty or so homework assignments were gradually submitted in the group.
No one dared to not complete the assignments given by the CEO.
During class, Chloe and Sofia sat together in the last row.
Donovan was giving a lecture on stage and said that he would be on a business trip in two weeks, so he wanted to finish the class first. He also mentioned that he assigned homework last week and was afraid that everyone would forget.
"Where is he going on a business trip?" Sofia asked Chloe on WhatsApp.
"How would I know? It was probably a last-minute decision," Chloe replied.
Donovan started to review the previous homework assignment, which was about crisis public relations, a very important topic.
"Only Chloe's work is acceptable this time. Everyone else, redo it!" Donovan said sternly.
These trainees were the cream of the crop, handpicked by Donovan, but in his eyes, they had all become garbage.
The temperature in the entire classroom dropped by several degrees.
"It's good that you have a good teacher at home. We don't have that kind of luck," Sofia said, looking dejected.
"Nonsense," Chloe thought to herself, feeling a tinge of sweetness in her heart.
Her eyes gleamed as she looked up at Donovan.
Unfortunately, Donovan's gaze also fell on her.
Chloe quickly lowered her head.
