Chapter 297 From Now On, We Rely on Each Other
After Chloe got into the car, Donovan leaned against it, smoking a cigarette to ease his discomfort.
The Barbara family made him feel extremely uneasy. Donovan had been born into wealth, and now, the pettiness, meanness, and utter lack of decorum of the small-town folk were on full display in this family, evident in every calculating glance and gesture.
He couldn't help but frown.
"What's wrong?" Chloe asked him.
"Nothing," he said, starting the car.
Chloe felt both inferior and guilty. "Is it the atmosphere at my uncle's house that made you feel this way?"
"Don't overthink it," he said. "You have no blood relation with them."
Donovan was trying to convince himself that Chloe did not come from this family.
“But they are my chosen family, and so is Jacob. My biological parents abandoned me, so they must not have wanted me. Maybe my biological parents were even worse off than my adoptive family, with even more difficult situations and more intense conflicts. But this is my family. If you feel uncomfortable, there's nothing I can do about it," Chloe said, gazing out the window.
Donovan remained silent.
Chloe suddenly realized she had forgotten to ask Grandma Morgan for the ring back. But considering how much Donovan disliked the atmosphere at her uncle's house, she decided not to make him go back.
Plus, Chloe never really cared about the ring and had never thought of using it to track down her estranged relatives. Since they had abandoned her, she had moved on from their fate. By the time they arrived home, it was already dark. They had to climb several flights of stairs from the underground garage.
Chloe held her waist, and Donovan offered his hand, which she instinctively took. In the elevator, Chloe tried to pull her hand away, but Donovan held on even tighter.
Chloe reflected, 'Time really does bring emotions.' Donovan's feelings were slowly coming back, even more intense than before. She used to be just an ordinary girl, but now she was pregnant with his child, and he was the father. That night, Chloe felt melancholy about her past.
"What's wrong?" Donovan noticed Chloe was in a bad mood, seemingly wiping away tears secretly.
"Nothing," Chloe said, remembering that Grandpa Blake had also passed away. She turned her back to Donovan and asked, "When Grandpa Blake passed away, why didn't I see you cry?"
"Why ask that?"
"How can you be so heartless? He was your grandfather, after all. But I..." Chloe thought of the ring that could prove her identity, which was left at Grandma Morgan's house, and felt even more disinterested.
She considered retrieving the ring during her next visit to Grandma Morgan's, but if she couldn't, it wasn't a big deal. She didn't anticipate needing the ring to locate her relatives.
Donovan's hand moved around Chloe's back, gently turning her to face him. He leaned in to kiss her, his voice filled with seduction and allure as he whispered, "From now on, we have each other's backs.”
His voice made Chloe's heart itch, and a fire ignited within her. Her long hair fell like a waterfall onto the pillow.
"Who wants to rely on you?" Chloe said.
Donovan's hand caressed Chloe's swollen belly as he continued to kiss her ear. "You."
"No!" Chloe didn't want to hear such fateful words.
"Who else?" Donovan asked Chloe. "Oh, right, there are two more people."
Chloe was startled. She pushed against Donovan's chest. "Who?"
"Clara and Gordon."
Chloe was shocked. She initially thought he was referring to the two children growing inside her. Surprised once more by Donovan, Chloe felt overwhelmed.
She thought to herself, 'I need to confess this secret to him; it feels impossible to keep it to myself any longer.'
