Chapter 278 Donovan's Deep Schemes
The next day, when Chloe woke up, Donovan had already gone to work.
She remembered that she had yoga classes every afternoon and wondered if the schedule had changed now that she was working at New East Group.
Chloe sent a WhatsApp message to Ms. Rebecca.
Chloe: [New East Group has opened. Do we need to adjust our class time?]
Ms. Rebecca's reply came after a long while.
Ms. Rebecca: [I teach at New East Group, usually after their work hours, so our usual time won't be affected. But today is the first day, and there's a lot to do. Can you come to New East Group? You don't need to bring a yoga mat, just your yoga clothes. Send a WhatsApp message to Susan, and she'll pick you up.]
Chloe was reluctant to go to New East Group, having resigned long ago. If she went, people would surely gossip.
Chloe replied: [Then I won't go today. I'll practice tomorrow.]
Ms. Rebecca: [But Mr. Blake wants you to come.]
Chloe thought, 'It seemed that Ms. Rebecca had consulted Donovan before replying to her message.'
After some contemplation, she sent a WhatsApp message to Donovan: [Why do you want me to go?]
Donovan didn't reply; instead, he called her directly. "Gary and Sharon are here. They came for you. You should come over."
Chloe thought, 'Mr. Lewis had previously told Brayden that he wanted to sign a three-year contract with me. Now that Donovan had taken over all the business from First Accounting Firm, they had followed suit.'
Chloe knew they were there to curry favor with Donovan and that it had nothing to do with her. But since she was the apparent excuse, she had to go.
She had breakfast and lunch together, and at eleven o'clock, she took Susan's car to New East Group.
Maya didn't come along. With Susan on the way and Donovan at New East Group, Maya stayed home to prepare dinner.
Before entering the lobby of New East Group, Chloe spent a long time mentally preparing herself.
As she stepped inside, she noticed several receptionists staring at her. Though respectful, their gazes were peculiar.
Chloe knocked on Donovan's office door.
"They're all on the top floor discussing the contract with Mario. You should go take a look," Donovan said.
"Oh," Chloe replied, a bit slow to react, and turned to leave.
Just as she turned, Donovan grabbed her wrist and pulled her along. "I'll take you to the elevator."
Chloe was startled, unsure if she had turned too slowly or if he had moved too quickly.
"How are you so fast?" she asked Donovan, turning her head.
Donovan's lips curved slightly upward. "No, I thought I was slow."
Chloe walked very slowly, and Donovan, staring at her, had to wait a long time for each step to fall.
He supported Chloe, and she felt a lot of pressure, always feeling like she was delaying him.
"You don't have to accompany me. I'm afraid I'll delay your work. It's not like I can't take the elevator," Chloe said, her tone slightly apologetic.
He smiled again. "It doesn't delay me."
He smiled twice, making Chloe feel inexplicably puzzled, not knowing what he was smiling about.
On the way to the elevator, they encountered several colleagues who respectfully nodded and called out, "Mr. Blake, Mrs. Blake."
Donovan, long accustomed to such high regard, ignored them all.
He escorted Chloe to Mario's office and then took the elevator back down, not involving himself in the audit department's affairs.
Mario stared at Chloe's large belly. "There's a saying that when you haven't seen someone for a long time, you should look at them with fresh eyes. I never expected you and Donovan to have children," Mario said, spreading his hands.
These people, who spent their days in the office, couldn't feel the passage of time. It seemed like just a few days since they last saw Chloe, and now her belly was so big.
"By the way, Ms. Baker, the reason we wanted to sign a contract with First Accounting Firm was entirely because of you. Since you've resigned from First Accounting Firm, we naturally want to follow you," Gary said.
Chloe knew these people were just using her as a pretext to curry favor with Donovan. Moreover, she might not even work at New East Group in the future. So, Chloe said, "I’m currently preparing for childbirth and can’t guarantee I can work. But I can recommend a more reliable accountant, Victoria, who trained me. She’s much better than I am."
At Chloe's suggestion, Gary and Sharon naturally agreed and signed a contract with New East Group's audit department.
But Mario and Victoria were very grateful to Chloe.
They were seasoned employees in the workplace and understood Mr. Blake's intentions. If Mr. Blake wanted them to be grateful to Chloe, they would be.
Donovan paved the way for Chloe to re-enter New East Group's audit department.
Everyone understood, and everyone tacitly agreed.
Everyone also knew that Donovan was setting Chloe up. If she didn't come to work, it would disappoint everyone.
Chloe could only say that Donovan was indeed a man of deep schemes.
