Chapter 87: She can't help it
In the car after work, Donovan listened as Chloe explained her dilemma. "I submitted my resume to the auditing department myself, and Lucas accepted it. I will be taking the written test on Friday," Chloe said proudly. She felt that despite going against the norm, she had achieved her goal.
"Oh?" Donovan was slightly surprised. "You did that?"
"Yes, I did," Chloe replied. "James' offer was quite tempting."
"Don't tell me you used the translated resume I provided?" Donovan asked nonchalantly.
"No, I didn't. I didn't want people to say I got in through a back door," Chloe explained.
"That's good. It's not like you're flaunting 'Donovan' all over the place," Donovan said.
Chloe sensed that Donovan had something on his mind. Moreover, on her German resume, she had clearly written "Ethan," his English name. What was the connection with the name "Donovan"? Did he know that she had called him by his name at lunchtime?
But, more importantly, how did he know? How did he always seem to know everything?
"Even though your resume for the auditing department was rejected by HR, it seems it hasn't affected your confidence," Donovan said calmly.
"I've always wanted to work in auditing since I was young. I won't give up until I achieve my goal," Chloe clenched her fist.
Donovan thought to himself: Since she fought for it herself, she should go if she wants to.
He casually took out a book from the side of the car. It had a bookwrap and was covered in plastic, which made it look quite high-end.
"I'm giving you this book," he said.
Chloe was puzzled, but when she saw the title "Authored by Donovan" on the bookwrap, she gasped in surprise.
"You published a book too?" Chloe asked in astonishment.
"What do you mean 'too'? Who else published a book?" Donovan pretended not to know anything.
Chloe suddenly realized that she almost slipped up. "No one, no one," she quickly replied.
She lowered her head to flip through the book. It was titled "Common Misconceptions and Strategies for Performance Evaluation."
"Did you write this?" Chloe asked. She had a hunch that everything Donovan said and did today had a purpose.
"It was written by the HR department, but they put my name on it. From now on, you can only have this book in your bag. Don't put anything else in it, and if you do, make sure I don't see it. You know the consequences," Donovan said in his usual tone, devoid of any emotions but with great authority.
Chloe felt a sudden chill. Did Brayden know about his book? If he didn't, then he was too perceptive. It seemed like she would have to be cautious and careful around him in the future, or else she wouldn't know what would happen.
"If you don't want to let it go, then don't!" Chloe said with a slightly defiant tone. After all, she had already finished reading Brayden's book.
She carefully put Donovan's book into her bag.
The next day, Lucas went to Donovan's office to discuss some issues.
Since the new department hadn't been established yet, there were naturally many problems.
"Did Chloe submit her application to you?" Donovan asked Lucas in German.
"Yes. She applied for a position in the finance department. I have a good impression of her - she is quick to react, logical, clear-minded, and very skilled in her field," Lucas replied.
Donovan suddenly felt a glow on his face. He lowered his head and coughed softly. "You may not know this, but she is my wife."
In fact, Donovan's intention was to show some leniency towards Chloe in front of Lucas, as she had been performing well recently without causing any trouble. Additionally, James in the finance department had limited abilities and couldn't bring out outstanding talent.
Lucas was very shocked. He said that Mr. Blake's wife was low-key and had personally come to his office to submit her application. And she was so excellent.
"But, Lucas, it seems you have a problem. Chloe told me that you two won't have children within the next five years. Is it because of you?" Lucas joked with Donovan.
"She said that?" Donovan frowned slightly and asked Lucas.
"Yes, she seemed very determined."
"She doesn't have a say in this matter!" Donovan said.
