Chapter 226 Emotional Breakdown
Chloe tried to ignore the noise and go back to sleep, but it was too loud for her to drift off again.
She reluctantly got out of bed, got dressed, and headed next door.
Donovan's bedroom door was ajar, and his phone continued to ring, but he was nowhere to be found.
“He might be in the bathroom, taking a shower," Chloe thought to herself.
She knocked on the bathroom door and called out, "Donovan, your phone is ringing." There was no response, indicating he probably didn't hear her.
Chloe knocked harder, trying to get his attention. When Donovan opened the bathroom door and stood in front of Chloe, she accidentally caught a glimpse of his private parts.
Despite her discomfort, Chloe made a conscious effort to maintain eye contact and focus on his face.
They were on the brink of divorce, and once it was finalized, he would be with another woman, and Chloe shouldn't be watching.
“What's going on?" He asked Chloe, standing with the door wide open. "Your phone has been ringing and waking me up several times."
"If it rings again, feel free to answer it for me," he said before shutting the door. Chloe was left feeling both irritated and confused outside.
The phone rang once more. Chloe hesitated, but seeing multiple missed calls from Paisley, she decided to answer, thinking there might be something important.
"Hello," Chloe answered the phone.
"Where's Donovan?" Paisley was somewhat surprised and a bit hostile upon hearing Chloe's voice.
"He's in the shower," Chloe replied.
"In the shower?" Paisley stunned.
"Yes, what's up?" Chloe asked calmly.
"Hey, can you let Donovan know that I'm finishing up the shoot tomorrow night and I'd like him to come? I've already mentioned it to him, just checking if he's still up for it. He should definitely be there. Paisley's tone held a hint of defiance towards Chloe as she intentionally highlighted her connection with Donovan.
"No need to ask. I've already agreed on Donovan's behalf," Chloe said.
"Great," Paisley said with a smile.
She had assumed that after the situation with Jacob and Amelia, Chloe no longer wanted to be with Donovan, even if he did. In fact, she was now subtly encouraging Donovan to pursue someone else.
Paisley had her sights set on Donovan, and Chloe was nudging him in Paisley's direction.
Everyone, including Chloe, his ex-wife, seemed to approve of the idea of Paisley and Donovan being a couple. Just as Chloe set his phone down on the table, Donovan emerged, clad only in a towel.
"Who was it?" He asked.
"Chloe looked at Donovan and, without emotion, relayed Paisley's invitation to her wrap-up party tomorrow night.
Donovan picked up the phone to call Paisley back.
"No need to. I've already agreed on your behalf," Chloe said, looking at Donovan.
The two locked eyes for ten seconds, tension thick in the air.
"Remember to bring my things back tomorrow. I have classes," Chloe said, then went back to her room to sleep.
The following day, she made a point to wake up early to have breakfast with Kenneth, as Donovan had already left for work.
"Kenneth, I mentioned to Donovan yesterday that I'll be staying home with you for a while, but I have online classes to attend. The time difference between Verdania and the States means I'll have less time with you during the day," Chloe explained to Kenneth, who always remained positive.
In the afternoon, Donovan's driver delivered Chloe's luggage. She set up her computer, logged into the school's website, took a short nap, and prepared to stay up late for her classes. After dinner, she dozed off, only waking up at eleven to realize she still had a class to attend in Verdania. Hurriedly grabbing a cup, she headed downstairs for some water.
As she reached the living room, the doorbell rang.
Chloe went to the water dispenser while keeping an eye on who it might be.
Donovan and Paisley walked in.
Donovan is in a charcoal gray shirt, and Paisley is in a long silver-white dress.
Chloe saw them and then turned to get water.
"Donovan, thank you for attending my wrap-up party tonight," Paisley said, looking at Chloe's back.
As Chloe turned to head upstairs with the water, Paisley leaned in and kissed Donovan on the cheek.
Donovan caught Chloe's gaze as she remained impassive while walking away.
He then wrapped his arm around Paisley's waist and remarked, "Keep me posted on any upcoming events like this.
"Okay," Paisley said, very pleased.
It seemed that the relationship between Donovan and Chloe had already broken down, and the reason they hadn't divorced yet was simply out of consideration for Kenneth still being around.
