Chapter 56 Out of Money
Donovan let out his bottled-up resentment on Chloe. By the time she woke up, her body was covered with bruises. Chloe felt that none of this was her fault at all. it was Donovan's weakness for always listening to Paisley that was to blame, and she was indignant about it.
After getting up and freshening up, Chloe didn't say a word to Donovan. She grabbed a large tote bag, packed a few of her clothes, and surreptitiously took their marriage certificate as well.
That evening, she didn't return home.
Instead, Chloe hailed a cab to the hospital, not bothering to ask Donovan for a ride. As if it were fate, she ran into Paisley again right there in the hospital's corridor, where Paisley was still filming.
Chloe stood there, her displeasure plain on her face. Paisley could tell that Chloe was not in a good mood, but she wasn't sure if it had anything to do with Donovan. After all, it was Monday when she told Donovan that bit of news. If he were to fly into a rage, it seemed likely he would have done so by now.
"Paisley, from now on, I'll handle my own affairs. There's no need for you to pass messages. I know you want to marry him, and someday, I just might let you have him!" After saying those words, Chloe walked away, leaving a crowd of people utterly confused.
Paisley, known for her gentle and gracious public persona, stepped in to smooth things over for Chloe. "This lady is a bit headstrong. Please forgive her, everyone. Let's get ready to shoot the next scene."
Paisley watched coolly as Chloe entered the hospital room.
It was the same hospital room where Chloe's mother, Amelia Morgan, was staying—a name that Paisley remembered. It was she who...
Chloe wanted to spend the night in her mother's hospital room and planned to return to her dorm the following day. Her mother was in a private room with an extra bed for companions, so chatting with Riley White took away some of the loneliness.
Paisley sent a WhatsApp message to Donovan: [What's up with your wife? She came to the hospital today, grilled me about what I told you, and confidently said that sooner or later, you two will divorce, and you'll be mine. Everyone on set is laughing at me. I had to claim she was my sister.]
Donovan was sitting on the couch at home when he read the message. His lips tightened, and a muscle in his temple twitched conspicuously. He told Samuel that Chloe wouldn't be coming home that evening because she needed to take care of her mother, anxious about the possibility of an unexpected situation.
His grandfather, a man of great learning and understanding, responded, "That's only right. Many tasks can't be entrusted to a caregiver." But Donovan's mind was elsewhere.
On Monday, as soon as Chloe had arrived at work, the intercom on her desk rang.
"Come here," Donovan's voice beckoned.
Chloe was currently angry with Donovan.
She was supposed to go to him, but Chloe, stubbornly, did not want to go, especially with Monday being so busy.
Donovan waited, but when she didn't show up, he called James Turner.
"Get Chloe to come to my office."
James felt a chill run down his spine. If Mr. Blake asked him to summon Chloe, it meant he couldn't do it himself. And if James couldn't manage it either, it would be his responsibility...
"Chloe, Mr. Blake wants you to drop by his office," James said to her, his tone almost pleading.
"After I finish these accounts," Chloe said, her eyes never leaving the complicated figures before her.
James felt like his head was going to explode.
He called Donovan back, reporting that Chloe was busy with accounting.
Donovan took a deep breath to control his temper. "Tell her, no show, no dough!"
James didn't understand what "money" Donovan was referring to. He thought perhaps it was an inside joke between the two.
Here he was, the Director of Finance, running errands on a Monday morning.
He relayed Donovan's message to Chloe. She paused for a moment, marked her place in the accounts, and headed for Donovan's office.
Chloe understood all too well what money Donovan was talking about – it was the five million dollar final payment.
She had put so much effort into playing this long game. She couldn't just give up halfway.
The purchase of the computer hadn't touched her savings, and she wasn't in need of money, but this was about the principle. After all, the five million had been agreed upon beforehand.
She knocked on the door to Donovan's office.
