Chapter 68: He Shouldn't Expect to Find Her
Chloe returned to the office, her face pale and silent.
She didn't say a word until 6 PM when she went back to her dormitory alone.
Logan happened to be in the dormitory and when he saw Chloe, he said, "You're back, Chloe?"
Sofia glared at Logan.
Sofia had already told Logan about Chloe and Donovan's marriage, but she didn't say much, only that Chloe was married to Donovan.
Because Sofia noticed that Logan had some interest in Chloe, she wanted him to let go of his feelings quickly.
Sofia asked her, "What happened? If you're in a bad mood, let's go eat hot pot. Logan wants to treat us to it. If I knew you were coming back to stay tonight, I would've called you from the office."
"Let's go, just have a hot pot. It's Friday anyways, no work tomorrow," Logan chimed in, excited. He didn't expect to run into Chloe today.
Chloe thought to herself, she did nothing wrong. She told her brother about her pregnancy not to extort him, but he still believed that she was pregnant. He actually thought that she had an abortion while he was away, what a thoughtless assumption!
"Let's go," Chloe said in frustration.
The three of them walked out of the dorm room together. Sofia didn't ask too many details because Logan was there. She knew that Chloe and Donovan had a fight, probably triggered by the miscarriage incident. But Chloe's pregnancy was originally a lie, she faked the pregnancy test results. Didn't Donovan know?
Luckily, Chloe's dorm room was still available.
Donovan drove out of the underground parking lot and saw the three of them chatting and laughing by the entrance of the dorm room across from his. He furrowed his brows tightly: was Chloe just carefree or did she not care at all?
He sped away in his car.
Back at home, Grandpa asked, "Where's Chloe? Why hasn't she come back?"
Donovan sank deep into the couch, rubbing his forehead. "She went back to the dorm."
"Why did she go back to the dorm again?"
Donovan remained silent for a moment and replied, "Grandpa..."
"What is it?"
"The baby might be gone. It was an accident," Donovan said with a sense of guilt and sadness.
Unexpectedly, Grandpa took it lightly. "It's alright. You don't need to feel guilty, and Chloe doesn't need to stay in the dorm because of this. If this baby is not meant to be, you will have another one someday, won't you, Donovan?"
Grandpa looked at Donovan expectantly, hoping to receive a positive answer.
But Donovan wasn't sure if that day would come.
"We will," Donovan replied half-heartedly.
"Then call Chloe back," Grandpa sat opposite Donovan, urging him earnestly.
Donovan thought of Chloe's excitement when she went out with someone else and felt ironic.
"Another day," he said.
"What day is another day? At the latest, tomorrow!"
Donovan struggled for a moment. "Okay."
Grandpa sent a WhatsApp message to Chloe: [Chloe, why did he kick you out again?]
Chloe was eating hot pot, full of enthusiasm and joy. It was not so much that she was happy right now, but rather that she used happiness to alleviate the frustrations and sadness in her heart.
Grandpa's message warmed her heart. She had been feeling quite wronged, but now she didn't feel that way anymore.
She sniffled and replied to Grandpa: [Am I just a disappointment?]
[After you feel better, come back. He's just one person, please be more understanding.]
Chloe replied: [Grandpa, it's already Friday today. I want to go shopping with my roommate tomorrow. Is that okay?]
"That day, Chloe, Grandpa is worried about you being outside," Chloe had read this sentence many times, many years had passed since anyone cared about her so much.
Chloe's eyes became moist, she missed her Grandpa too.
But even if she wanted to go back, she needed Donovan's approval, and besides, she didn't really want to go back.
In Donovan's eyes, only Paisley's words were worth believing.
The more Chloe thought about it, the more frustrated she felt. On the way back, she blocked Donovan's WhatsApp and phone number.
He shouldn't even think about finding her.
