Chapter 430 You Have Never Been Smart
The next day, Chloe had no classes to attend, but she didn't want Donovan to know that she was teaching at Pearl Peak City University. After all, they were now unrelated to each other, and the more he knew, the worse it might be for him and Francis.
Chloe emerged from her room and saw that Donovan had already made breakfast.
She took a bite of the breakfast he had made and thought it tasted even better than three years ago.
After all, he was just learning how to cook three years ago.
He had also steamed an egg custard, which looked better than any store-bought version. The golden custard was smooth and delicate, topped with a few slices of mushrooms and some shrimp, and sprinkled with seasoning, making it smell delicious.
"You can make egg custard?" she asked Donovan.
After three years, Chloe felt a bit estranged and distant when talking to him.
Donovan looked at her mockingly, asking. "You can't?"
"I've never made it," Chloe said, lowering her head in embarrassment. After all, egg custard was something kids like to eat, and since Chloe didn't eat it, she never made it. "Even if I tried, I probably wouldn't do it well. It looks simple, but it's actually quite difficult. I'm not very good at it."
Chloe had once seen an egg custard tutorial online by chance. Although it seemed simple, one wrong step could result in an unappealing dish with no aesthetic value.
"You've never been smart," Donovan replied.
Chloe was left speechless again and could only eat in silence.
Her phone rang at that moment; it was a WhatsApp message from Isabel.
"Ms. Baker, I wrote a paper in the dorm today and did some research. It's a bit late now, but I'm heading to the office right away."
If it hadn't been for Isabel's WhatsApp reminder, Chloe would have almost forgotten about this.
She glanced at her watch; it was almost nine o'clock.
"Are you very busy?" Donovan asked with a hint of sarcasm. "If you're busy, you can leave now."
"Oh, I'm fine," Chloe said, feeling a bit awkward.
Donovan was probably criticizing Chloe for neglecting Francis for her studies and career, disappearing for three years, and even getting WhatsApp messages during breakfast.
After breakfast, Chloe did the dishes.
Then, she grabbed her bag and told Donovan, "I have a meeting to attend, so I need to go."
"At the Stellar Corp?" Donovan asked.
"Oh, no, it's something else."
Donovan scrutinized her. "How much do you make a year now?"
Chloe calculated in her head. "It's gotta be around a million dollars, all told."
"A million dollars?" Donovan scoffed.
It seemed like he was mocking Chloe, hinting that she had sacrificed her family for a mere million dollars, belittling the value he perceived in her choice. That's how she realized herself! "Go ahead."
Chloe stood there, not moving.
"Why aren't you leaving?" Donovan asked, looking up at her.
"How's Sofia?" she asked.
Donovan laughed coldly again. "You have a good memory, remembering you have a friend named Sofia. Ask about her yourself."
Rejected by Donovan, Chloe left feeling dejected.
She thought to herself, 'When I left home back then, it wasn't just for myself; Clara and Gordon were driving meto depression. Moreover, the Baker family was indeed ruined by Donovan. Todd's corneas were given to him, Amelia died because of him, and she died with a bad reputation. All of this was because he had money. And his ambiguous relationship with Janet, and the possible child. Pamela's omnipresent pressure had organized a huge trap, monitoring everything about me. Leaving was the wisest choice.'
Unexpectedly, three years later, Chloe came back and got involved with him again. Chloe didn't know how Pamela would deal with her this time. Lost in thought, she arrived at the school office, where Isabel and Saoirse were already present.
