Chapter 129 Was It You?
Amelia's reaction was a mix of surprise and relief. "It's you?"
Her voice was barely a whisper, but Donovan caught every word. He thought she might say more, but she slowly closed her eyes and turned her head. Donovan checked her breathing; she had simply drifted back into unconsciousness.
Riley entered with a basin and warm towels. "Has she woken up before?" Donovan asked.
"No, not in the six years since the accident. Why do you ask?" Riley replied, washing the towels.
"She hasn't?" Donovan was even more surprised.
"If she did, Chloe would be over the moon." Riley seemed to imagine how happy Chloe would be, then added, "Chloe is her daughter, you know her, right?"
"I do."
Donovan stayed for several more hours, but Amelia showed no sign of waking up. He left, still puzzled. How did Amelia recognize him? They had both been in a coma for six years!
That night at the hospital, he asked Chloe, "You didn't visit your mom this week. How is she?"
Chloe had improved significantly, with her dizziness and headaches almost gone. But she still needed two hours of treatment every day. "Sofia went to see her yesterday. My mom is the same," Chloe said, a hint of sadness in her voice. "No news is good news."
"She hasn't woken up in all these years?"
"No," Chloe sighed.
Donovan was even more confused. How could Amelia mistake him for someone else? The only explanation was that Chloe often mentioned his name in front of her even though Amelia was in a coma. Though Amelia couldn't speak, she should know him. But how could she recognize him at a glance?
"What did you tell your mom about me?" Donovan asked Chloe.
Chloe looked surprised. "I've never mentioned you to my mom." Chloe had agreed to Donovan's proposal of a contract marriage to get treatment for her mom. She didn't want to bring it up in front of her mom, so she never mentioned it.
Donovan found it very strange. After a moment, Donovan told Chloe, "You'll be discharged next Wednesday."

Wednesday. The nurse removed Chloe's bandages. Chloe immediately reached for the back of her head. Fortunately, her hair was only slightly shorter, and she had enough volume to cover it up.
Back home that evening, Chloe held a small mirror in her hand, comparing herself to the person in the full-length mirror. Unfortunately, due to the angle, she couldn't get a clear view, and she walked out of the bathroom dejectedly. Donovan returned to reading in bed.
"It looks terrible," Chloe said.
"Yes, I've seen worse," Donovan replied.
Chloe knew he was about to mention the day she wet herself, so she ignored him and turned over to sleep.
The next day, the lobby of the New East Group was bustling. A shampoo advertisement was being filmed starring Paisley as a corporate professional, stepping out of the building and running her fingers through her hair. They were going to shoot on location for a whole day.
Donovan had readily agreed to Paisley's request. But when Paisley wanted Donovan to take a look while she was filming, Donovan simply said, "I'm busy."
At noon, the staff of the New East Group came down to eat, and Paisley finished her morning work, ready to continue filming in the afternoon.
Just as Paisley was thinking about how to give herself a little more presence and make some contact with Donovan, an unexpected guest arrived - Jacob Baker. Jacob stormed into the New East Group building, looking at the crowd coming out of the building.
Chloe and Victoria also walked out of the elevator. Jacob snatched the megaphone from the ad director and began, "Chloe, when will your contract marriage with Donovan end? Was the point of this marriage of convenience just about money? Mr. Perez, for Ellie's sake, didn't expose you and instead let Ellie become his assistant at the Central South Law Firm. You, with no conscience, are still here for money, in a contract marriage with Donovan. Don’t you have any conscience?"
Chloe was taken aback by Jacob's unconventional approach, and the back of her head was throbbing. She held her hand to the back of her head.
