Chapter 515 He Was Very Resolute
Chloe thanked Oscar face-to-face, her voice full of emotion. "Thanks, Oscar. I spent over six months working on this."
"Don't sweat it, Chloe. I didn't read a single word of the project. I just saw the title and knew it was yours. No clue how it ended up in my inbox," Oscar replied.
Chloe had a gut feeling. She thought it was Jeffery who stole it. Oscar was his advisor, and Jeffery might have stolen the project to give it to Oscar. Then, the two of them could research it together and potentially earn tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars in prize money.
Chloe didn't think much of Jeffery since then, but this was just her suspicion, and she hadn't told anyone. But it was clear Oscar was on the same page. He even confronted Jeffery about it.
Oscar gave Jeffery a meaningful look. "Jeffery, you gotta be a good person before you can be a good scholar, you know?"
Jeffery quickly caught on to what Oscar was hinting at. Rumors had been swirling around school, saying he had stolen Chloe's project and handed it to his advisor. Some even said Jeffery, unable to win Chloe's affection, wanted to humiliate her.
"Is that what you think, Oscar?" Jeffery asked, standing tall with his hands behind his back, looking all righteous.
"Whatever the case, this can't happen again. If it does, I'll have you expelled," Oscar warned.
A shadow crossed Jeffery's face. He pressed his lips together tightly, thinking, 'Chloe probably thinks the same, doesn't she?'
Jeffery suspected Cynthia might be behind it, but he had no clue why she'd do such a thing. They had no beef, and he had no proof Cynthia had stolen the project. He didn't want to accuse her without evidence and had to endure the school's gossip alone. Finally, he couldn't take it anymore and signed up for the school's military service program.
He used to be brilliant and innocent, excelling in academics, art, and basketball. But now, he was weighed down by a baseless accusation he couldn't shake off, and he didn't even want to try. He felt like a rat in the street, despised by everyone. Misunderstood by Oscar and Chloe, he felt like he was dying inside.
Jeffery, being a person with self-respect, decided to leave the school. He told Maya about his decision, but Maya was firmly against it. But Jeffery said he had made up his mind.
At the hillside villa, Maya had prepared dinner, but Donovan hadn't come back yet. She sat on the couch, wiping away tears.
Francis was chatting with her. "What's wrong, Maya?"
"Jeffery's being stubborn. He's giving up on his studies," Maya said.
"Jeffery doesn't want to study anymore?" Francis didn't quite get it.
"It's not like that; he's joining the military. What's so great about that? He has to take a leave of absence," Maya explained.
"What's a leave of absence?" Just as Francis was asking, Donovan walked in.
"Dad, Maya's crying. You should talk to her," Francis said to Donovan.
"What's going on?" Donovan asked as he washed his hands. "Let's talk over dinner."
The three of them sat down at the dining table, and Maya explained that Jeffery was joining the military but wouldn't say why.
"His father and I were hoping he'd find a good job soon, but now..." Maya trailed off.
Donovan had a gut feeling this had something to do with Chloe. Otherwise, Jeffery wouldn't be so determined.
