Chapter 88: Then I'm afraid you won't be happy
Chloe followed James' advice and went to work every day at the New East Group shopping mall, busy with summarizing the accounts there. Now, she didn't go to and from work with Donovan anymore. She went to work alone, returned home alone, and then immediately went to bed.
On Friday, she went back to the company to participate in the audit department's exam. There were two exams in total, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and there would be an interview next week.
During the written exam, Chloe ran into someone - Ellie.
The audit department was recruiting externally, and Ellie had also come to participate. After all, the starting salary at the New East Group's audit department was $20,000with no upper limit, which was very attractive. Ellie successfully passed the preliminary exam and entered the written exam.
This time, Ellie's brother Ethan accompanied her, as Ellie had told him that Chloe also worked at the New East Group and she assumed that Chloe would also apply for the audit department. Besides, Ellie enjoyed causing trouble, so it would be good to see her half-brother and Chloe in conflict.
When Ethan saw Chloe, she tried to avoid him, but it was too late as he had already noticed her. His emotions were complicated as he looked at her.
"Chloe, Ethan is waiting for you!" Ethan's direct and explicit gaze fixed on Chloe.
After Ethan had flirted with Chloe last time, he got beaten up by Donovan's men. But he didn't learn his lesson from it. Instead, he found Chloe to be a stubborn and strong-willed girl who aroused his interest and challenged him. Moreover, Chloe was truly beautiful, and he felt proud to have her by his side.
Seeing Ethan, Chloe couldn't help but think of the incident when they went to the police station last time, which didn't sit well with Donovan...
On Monday, the Audit Department released the list of candidates who made it to the second round of interviews, and Chloe's name was among them.
However, she suddenly didn't want to go to the Audit Department anymore. She wrote an email to Lucas, expressing her reconsideration and stating that she thought she was more suited for the finance department. She thanked Lucas for everything and apologized for causing him so much trouble.
Lucas approached Donovan and said, "Luh, your wife gave up the job in the audit department. Did you know about it?"
"I didn't know," Donovan was somewhat surprised. After all, the audit department had always been Chloe's goal.
"Could you ask her why? Her test scores were outstanding, and I don't want to miss out on such talent," Lucas said.
Knowing Chloe as he did, Donovan was aware that she wanted to join the audit department, not the finance department. Could it be that she wanted to work for Brayden's company again?
He looked at his watch and realized it was almost the end of the workday. However, Chloe's working hours at the New East Group mall matched those of the mall, which meant she would finish at ten in the evening.
Donovan went out for a meal, spent some time in the office, and then drove to the New East Group mall without informing Chloe in advance.
Around ten past ten, Chloe walked out of the mall, her body exhausted. She was holding a cup of milk tea in her hand.
She wore a white shirt and jeans, carrying a canvas bag on her back. She still looked like a college student, but at this moment, perhaps due to tiredness, her eyes were lowered, making her seem pitiful.
When Chloe reached the entrance of the mall, Donovan's horn honked a few times.
She snapped out of her daze and got into Donovan's car, still sipping on her milk tea.
"Having junk food again?" Donovan frowned as he saw the milk tea in Chloe's hand.
Chloe was very tired, and her mind was not quite clear. She glanced at the milk tea in her hand and replied, "The mall sells it, and it's not just me who drinks it."
"Others are not my wife, so I don't have a say in what they do," Donovan said, starting the car.
Due to Donovan's comment, Chloe's muddled mind became somewhat clearer, and her heart was filled with sweet memories. She quietly placed the milk tea in the small trash bin in front of the car and looked out the window.
"Why did you give up on the Audit Department?" Donovan got back on track. "Weren't you always eager to join it?"
"Lucas told you, right?" Chloe looked out the window. "I saw Ellie on the day of my written exam, and she passed too."
"Then, what does that have to do with you?"
"I was afraid you wouldn't be happy," Chloe lowered her head and began fiddling with her hands.
Chloe's words inexplicably made Donovan happy, and she started to care whether he was happy or not. He glanced at her and asked, "What am I not happy about?"
"Ellie's brother Ethan, the last time we were both taken to the police station. If I go to the auditing department, I will definitely be an assistant like Ellie, and conflicts are inevitable in our work. His brother would take advantage of the situation, I can see it. I'm afraid that if conflicts happen, it would be embarrassing to involve the auditing department, and you would be angry and unhappy. So I won't go. In the finance department, even if his brother wants to do something, he won't be able to. Let's wait until next year. Once I officially obtain my CPA license, then I can go. I'll hone myself in the finance department for another year." Chloe remembered the last time when Donovan walked at the entrance of the police station without an umbrella, she didn't want something like that to happen again.
Donovan gripped the steering wheel and felt the cool breeze tonight, which was very refreshing.
"You're really not going?" Donovan asked Chloe again.
Chloe nodded solemnly, "Not going!"
Just as Chloe finished speaking, Donovan's phone rang. His phone was placed between the two of them.
With just a glance, she saw three words: Paisley.
Chloe instantly felt upset again.
Donovan answered the call with his earphones on, and Chloe couldn't hear what was being said. It was probably just casual conversation.
Chloe's gaze turned towards the window, feeling unhappy, but she had no say in the matter.
After finishing the call, Donovan didn't say anything to her.
When they arrived home, Donovan went to the bathroom to take a shower, while Chloe fell asleep immediately. She knew that Donovan had been holding back these past few days, wanting to touch her, but seeing Paisley's call just now, she had made up her mind not to give in.
Donovan came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel and saw that Chloe was already asleep. She looked so peaceful when she slept, like a little pig. Her face had the delicacy of a porcelain doll, and her flawless skin seemed delicate enough to break.
He sat by the edge of her bed and couldn't help but lightly stroke her face with his index finger.
He thought of how she looked when she said, "I was afraid you wouldn't be happy."
Donovan went downstairs and called Lucas, asking him to remove Ellie from the interview without giving a reason.
Additionally, he called James and asked the finance department to send more staff because working at the New East Group mall was exhausting.
James was apprehensive and thought that Donovan is really spoiling his wife. He quickly arranged for two more people.
Originally, Donovan wanted someone to supervise Chloe and make sure she didn't drink milk tea, but obviously that couldn't be done, as her legs were attached to her body.
Fortunately, the days of working at the New East Group mall were coming to an end.
