Chapter 145 "Will It Hurt, My Husband?"

Amelia was about to be discharged from the hospital. In recent days, Chloe would go straight to Amelia's place after work to tidy up. The house felt empty after Jacob's belongings were removed.

Chloe cleaned her own room, making the bed with a floral bedsheet. The serene ambiance of the small bedroom brought back memories of days gone by.

After about twenty days, Amelia was finally discharged. Chloe had arranged for a caregiver, Layla Moore, to look after her.

"My mom is coming home, and I want to be with her for a while. Is everything okay with Grandpa?" Chloe asked Donovan, seeking time off.

"How long will you be gone?" Donovan inquired, observing her.

"I'm not sure, at least until my mom settles in. Besides, I'm not entirely at ease with the new caregiver," Chloe explained.

"Go ahead, and keep me posted," Donovan replied.

Chloe, with her backpack and suitcase, prepared to leave the room. "Chloe," Donovan called out, approaching her. He pressed her against the wall and kissed her. They rarely shared such intimate moments, leaving Chloe feeling a rush of emotions.

"I'm leaving," Chloe said.

"Go on," Donovan replied. He didn't see the point in a prolonged goodbye; it was better to part ways at that moment.

After bidding farewell to her grandfather downstairs, Chloe left. The room fell silent.

Chloe returned to her old house, feeling as if she had traveled back in time to six years ago. Her mother's mobility was still limited, requiring a wheelchair at times. Chloe would sometimes act like a little girl, leaning on Amelia's lap while Amelia caressed her hair and spoke to her.

"Mom," Chloe called out.

"Yes?"

Chloe didn't really have anything to say; she just wanted to hear Amelia's response. Whenever Amelia acknowledged her, tears welled up in Chloe's eyes.

"You've been away from Donovan for so long. Doesn't he miss you?" Amelia asked Chloe.

"I don't know," Chloe replied. It had been about a week since she last saw Donovan. Given their different positions at work, not seeing each other was normal. They rarely exchanged messages on WhatsApp, except for important matters.

Since joining the audit department, Chloe had also withdrawn from the "New East Star" program, no longer participating in the training. She just wanted to be a professional financial staff member and had no interest in management.

"How did you and Donovan meet?" her mother asked.

"New East Group is the largest conglomerate in Maple Valley, so I went for an interview, and that's how I met him. Mom, about the cornea donation, please don't tell him," Chloe reiterated to Amelia, not sure why she was keeping it from him. Perhaps because if she told him, it would be a moral constraint, and he might not divorce her in the future.

Chloe clearly distinguished between gratitude and love. She wondered how they would get along if Donovan found out.

Amelia felt a bit guilty and nodded slowly. "Then how did you two fall in love? I think someone of his caliber should find someone..."

Chloe knew that Amelia was doubting her marriage. After all, there were many examples of women selling themselves to wealthy men for money. "Mom, you should know that your daughter is exceptional, right? We started dating during a team-building event, and then we just got married. Besides, he's a good person," Chloe said insincerely.

"Okay."

That evening, when Chloe went to take out the trash, she saw Donovan's Maserati parked downstairs. She hesitated for a moment and then went to the pharmacy. She bought contraceptives, fearing that they might engage in sexual activities if they met.

When Chloe returned home, she saw Donovan sitting next to Amelia, and they seemed to be getting along well. "Donovan came to see you," Amelia said.

"It took him a few days to come?" Chloe muttered, a comment meant for Amelia to see how affectionate they actually were.

"Donovan, should I ask if Chloe is in pain?"

Donovan sat on the sofa, his gaze lost in Chloe, his eyes filled with indescribable emotions.

"How have you been these days?" Chloe, as if just learning to be caring, asked him.

"I was on a business trip."

Seeing how well he was playing along, Chloe laughed. "You were on a business trip?"

"I wasn't. It seems you really don't know, you're so at ease." Donovan expressed his dissatisfaction with Chloe.

"I've been busy! Besides, no news is good news, right?" Chloe defended herself. During this time, she would take care of Amelia in the morning, rush to the company, and come back in the afternoon to tidy up the house, but she hadn't heard anything about Donovan.

The last time Donovan came, the apartment was filled with stuff like a warehouse, but this time it was different. It was very neat, showing the effort Chloe had put in. The apartment was not as big as the hillside villa, and one could even hear echoes of their conversation.

Chloe felt that their dialogue was warm and very ordinary. Amelia instantly felt her own redundancy. She smiled and said, "You guys talk, I'll go to bed first." Layla then pushed Amelia into the bedroom.

Only Chloe and Donovan were left in the room, and they fell into silence. Chloe went to wash her face and looked at her dark circles in the mirror. They weren't as severe as before, almost gone. It shows that no matter what cosmetics were used, the most important way was to treat the root cause - no sex, no staying up late.
