Chapter 677 Separate the Two People
"Francis, go with Chloe and learn how to ask for money," Donovan said, glancing back at Francis.
"Sure," Francis replied.
With just Donovan and Jake left in the room, Chloe figured Donovan had something to discuss with Jake. Her expression darkened briefly before she led Francis to a small room next to the hospital to talk about compensation.
"Jake, tell me what happened," Donovan asked.
He sent Francis away to prevent them from coordinating their stories. He didn't trust Francis, who had grown up under Cynthia's influence and had a sketchy background. Donovan was also wary of Jake, knowing that kids from such environments often became adept at hiding their true selves and were prematurely mature and ruthless.
"Well, we were ice skating, and Francis was ahead of me. When he was about to skate under that light, I noticed it was already shaking. I didn't think much of it and skated a few steps to catch up with him. I could've gotten away before the light fell, but my skating skills aren't great. I was too slow and got hit by the light," Jake said, looking down in embarrassment.
Donovan didn't say anything, just patted Jake's head and said, "Good boy, Jake. If you want anything, let me know, and I'll get it for you."
"Really?" Jake's eyes lit up.
"Really."
Jake furrowed his brows, thinking for a while before cautiously saying, "I want a set of LEGO toys, like the ones Francis has. Is that okay?"
"Okay. You saved Francis this time, so you deserve a reward," Donovan said.
Jake nodded.
Meanwhile, Chloe had finished negotiating with the ice rink's legal department. The result: they refunded all the fees the Blake family had paid, Francis and Jake could skate there for free for life, and they compensated the Blake family with $30,000.
This was the best deal Chloe could get.
After the negotiation, Francis said to her, "Mom, you're amazing."
Chloe just smiled, still worried about Donovan and Jake, and hurried back to the hospital room.
As she entered Jake's room, Donovan was just about to leave.
"Finished talking?" Donovan asked.
"Yes."
"I'll go talk to him again. Francis, come with me," Donovan called out.
"Dad, I've already talked to Mom and Jake. What else is there to talk about?" Francis asked.
"Let's see if what Chloe and I talked about matches," Donovan said.
Francis followed Donovan out.
Donovan casually chatted with the ice rink's legal department for a bit, then asked Francis how the accident happened. Francis's account was similar to Jake's, which reassured Donovan.
He still didn't fully trust Jake's story.
"Let's go buy some toys for Jake," Donovan said to Francis.
Hearing they were going to buy toys for Jake, Francis was naturally excited. He said "Okay" and followed Donovan downstairs.
Before long, Francis was holding a bunch of toys and handed them to Jake.
Seeing this, Jake's face lit up with happiness.
Jake thought, 'If I get gifts every time I save Francis, I should keep doing it. Francis is really good to me, and I save him willingly. Plus, Dad is so good to me.'
However, Chloe felt uneasy. She knew what Donovan was thinking. He just wanted to use rewards to make Jake keep saving Francis. Although she found this very inappropriate, she couldn't help but feel relieved that the injured person wasn't Francis.
