Chapter 50 Is That Why You Came to Sleep in My Bed?
After returning to the room, Chloe started discussing the caretaking of patients with Riley White.
Coincidentally, Samuel had sent Chloe a WhatsApp message to ask about her mother's condition.
Chloe was deeply touched. Her grandpa was a well-educated and cultivated man.
Using the voice reply feature, she responded to Samuel: [Samuel, Mom's doing well, don’t worry.]
"Chloe, who are you talking to?" Jacob asked once more.
"It's none of your business."
Jacob guessed she must be talking to Donovan's grandpa. Seemingly, Chloe had a pretty good relationship with Samuel. His eyes shifted, and a sly idea came to mind.
"Jacob, is your Mom okay?" Brayden called out from the doorway.
"She's fine. Ready to go?"
"Yeah."
After one last glance at Chloe and noting the way Brayden had just spoken, Jacob could tell that the conversation between the two had soured.
Gritting his teeth, Jacob left. Chloe was truly stubborn and unenlightened. She needed some covert handling.
Glancing at her watch, Chloe saw it was nearly four o’clock. After giving a few instructions to Riley White, she, too, departed.
Paisley's scenes weren't finished filming yet, and she continued working on set. Chloe didn't dwell on it.
What Chloe didn't know was that Paisley had seen the entire hallway conversation between her and Brayden.
Once downstairs, Chloe sent Donovan a WhatsApp message. He called back almost immediately, with a quick "Wait for me five minutes" before hanging up.
After getting into the car, Donovan was engrossed in calls about work matters, discussing how to bid for the land in the southern district, the valuation, and how many houses to build, and he also planned to construct another upscale shopping center.
Bored, Chloe started browsing through her phone. As she scrolled, sleepiness overcame her, and she dozed off in the car.
Near home, Donovan finally ended his calls.
"Fell asleep?" he asked.
Stirring from her daze, Chloe lethargically mumbled.
"What were you up to last night? Got you this tired?" Donovan teased.
Chloe ignored him, turned to her side, and continued to sleep.
At dinner, Samuel kept inquiring about Mom's illness—what it was, how it was being treated, and whether there were any complications. His concern was evident and heartfelt.
Chloe found Samuel's kindness remarkably touching. Despite grappling with his own battle against lung cancer, he still cared deeply for others. It brought a warm sensation to her heart, but the thought of Samuel's limited time also conjured an urge to cry.
After the meal, Donovan went upstairs.
Moments later, clutching her comforter, Chloe moved from her own room to his. Ever since Donovan had been sleeping alone in the double bed, he always stayed in the middle.
Upon seeing Chloe, Donovan put down the book he was reading, clasped his hands together, and looked at her curiously. "What's this about?"
He didn't seem the least bit concerned about Chloe standing there, comforter in arms.
"Do you mind if I sleep here?" Chloe said, her eyelids drooping, looking forlorn.
"Oh?" Donovan's face broke into an amused smile. "Didn't I hear that someone got used to sleeping alone?"
"I still not quite used to it. A bit scared. Could you move over?" Chloe murmured, looking humbly at her feet.
After all, Chloe was still a young girl, and besides, she had already explained the situation with the umbrella to Donovan. Even though he still harbored some hard feelings about the computer donation incident, it was in the past now—the ex was gone, and even if he couldn't let go, there was no way around it.
Donovan shuffled over, making room for Chloe.
She spread her comforter neatly but accidentally touched his arm—which was surprisingly hot. The air conditioner in Donovan's room was set low, making it a bit chilly.
Summoning all her courage, Chloe scooted under his quilt.
Donovan felt restless with her so close, but he had self-control after all—even if Chloe thought Donovan didn't show any reaction.
"Thank you," Chloe said, lying in his bed while he leaned back against the headboard. She looked up at him with twinkling eyes as they talked.
"Thanking me for what?"
"To get the best caregiver for my mom. I just found out today."
"So, is that why you came to sleep in my bed?"
"Of course not."
Unable to restrain himself any longer, Donovan slid down and pressed against Chloe before turning off the bedside lamp.
Chloe placed her hands on his chest and said, "Wait a minute."
"What now?" Donovan asked with a hint of impatience in his voice.
"Be gentle," she murmured.
"Was I ever rough?" Donovan knew what Chloe meant and teased her on purpose.
"Yeah, you're so heavy," Chloe said innocently, confessing that he always made her ache.
"Alright, I'll try to lose some weight."
Chloe was at a loss for words.
