Chloe was excited all night and couldn’t sleep. She was afraid that Amelia might fall back asleep, so she went to her side early in the morning and gently nudged her.
Amelia woke up with a smile, asking, "What's up, Chloe?"
Seeing Amelia well, Chloe replied, "I'm off to work. If you need anything, just ask Riley to call me." Amelia affectionately touched Chloe's face and agreed.
As Chloe left, she ran into Dr. Johnson, who was there to check on her mother. Chloe asked Riley to update her on the results later. On her way to work, Chloe felt a sense of lightness and joy.
In the elevator, she met James, who now treated her with great respect, a stark contrast to when she first interned. "Chloe, feeling tired? What's the audit department up to?" James asked, seemingly making small talk.
"Yes, it's tiring. I'm still new, so there's a lot I don't understand," Chloe replied calmly.
Though Chloe had only been in the audit department for a short while, she knew they were investigating the finance department. Chloe had worked as a junior accountant in finance before, with limited access to information. Now, under Victoria's guidance, she was privy to many things, including the fact that James was under investigation. However, Chloe remained silent about James.
As the elevator doors opened, Donovan appeared before Chloe who had been lost in thought She was startled by his sudden presence.
"Miss me?" Donovan asked, stepping into the elevator. He stood in front, looking at Chloe through the mirror. Once again, Donovan's words hit the mark, unsettling Chloe.
"My mother just woke up. Can I stay with her in the hospital for a few days?" Chloe asked.
"Sure," Donovan replied, seemingly unfazed. Chloe's lips curled slightly.
When they reached the top floor, Donovan walked straight to Mario's office, ignoring Chloe. Chloe had never seen Donovan come to this floor before, and his purpose seemed urgent.
Chloe busied herself with work in the audit department. At lunch, she met Sofia, who whispered, "Your audit department is bold. I heard the prosecutor's office took James away today."
Chloe was taken aback. She didn't expect Donovan to act so swiftly. She realized that Donovan must have discussed this with Mario when he visited the audit department earlier in the day.
The audit department was in turmoil, and Donovan's intentions were deep. Chloe felt a chill.
"I heard James was one of the original employees who started the company with Mr. Blake. Otherwise, he would have been dealt with long ago," Sofia whispered to Chloe during their meal.
Chloe became even more afraid. She hadn't heard any rumors in the audit department. As Donovan's confidante, she was left in the dark about everything.
