Chapter 473 Mom Made It For Me
Chloe popped up, grabbed Francis's hand, and headed to the kitchen.
"Hey, I'm gonna whip up some egg tarts for you. Wanna lend a hand?"
"Sure thing."
Meanwhile, Donovan was chilling on the couch at Cynthia's place, leaning back and watching Jake mess around.
Cynthia was just quietly eyeing Donovan. She already had Donovan's WhatsApp account, but it wasn't until she officially took Jake in that she started hitting him up more often.
She couldn't figure out what was going on with her. Every time she shot Donovan a message, her body would shake, and her heart would pound like crazy. It was like she was back to being that nervous, anxious eighteen-year-old.
Growing up without a dad, she found Donovan's mature figure filling those gaps in her life. She still remembered that one time Donovan was explaining something to her, and the sunlight hit his face just right.
Yesterday, Donovan texted her saying he was gonna sign a deal with Stellar Corp today and then swing by to see Jake. With shaky hands, Cynthia replied with just one word: [Okay.]
Now a professor, Cynthia had more free time, unlike Chloe, who was still grinding out papers for promotions. Cynthia was pretty diligent, starting to tidy up the house first thing in the morning. She never thought Donovan would come back into her life, let alone show up at her place. Adopting Jake was just a way to stay connected with Donovan.
It all felt like a dream.
Donovan sat down, watching Jake play nearby.
"Jake's kinda shy and pretty skinny," Donovan said, eyes still on Jake.
Cynthia almost spilled the water she was holding. "Yeah. I try to make dishes he likes so he can put on more weight. Are you... staying for dinner?"
"No, I gotta pick up Francis." Donovan glanced at his watch; it was already five.
"Where's Francis?"
"At Chloe's place."
"Oh, I already poured the tea. Aren't you gonna drink it?" Cynthia looked down at the cup, feeling a bit let down.
"Maybe next time." With that, Donovan got up and left. What Donovan said gave Cynthia a glimmer of hope, and she started daydreaming.
As Donovan walked down the street, he got two texts. They were three pics from an unknown WhatsApp number: one showed Chloe lying on a bed with Derek sitting beside her, looking at her all peaceful; another had Derek giving Chloe a stuffed animal, and Chloe looking up at him all happy; the last one showed Chloe leaning into Derek's arms, tears streaming down her face.
The pics were kinda blurry, like they were taken through a window.
Donovan pressed his lips together. Chloe's love life was really something!
Donovan knocked on Chloe's door, and she opened it. She was wearing a blue and white checkered apron, her hair tied back, with gloves on her hands.
"Hey, you're here. I'm baking egg tarts for Francis," Chloe said as she headed back to the kitchen, probably 'cause the egg tarts were ready.
Donovan walked in and closed the door behind him.
"Dad, the egg tarts Mom made for me smell so good. Wanna try some?" Francis was sitting on the couch, happily munching on an egg tart.
"Mom?" Donovan frowned and glanced at the kitchen. The frosted glass door was closed, and he could only see Chloe's blurry figure.
"Yeah. Isn't she your ex-wife? Some guy told me today," Francis said while eating. "The egg tarts are so good. You never let me have them, but Mom made them for me."
Donovan ignored Francis and went into the kitchen.
Chloe was busy checking the oven temp and pouring egg mixture into new tart shells. The kitchen was filled with the warm, sweet smell of egg tarts.
