Chapter 401 Let Her Go
After Chloe had been gone for a week, Donovan was still a mess emotionally, which was noticed by Charles.
"Donovan, what's up? You okay?"
"Chloe went abroad again. How could I be in a good mood?" Donovan slumped in his chair.
"Studying's good. Better than women who just spend money," Charles said. "Some women even stab their husbands. Be grateful Chloe's smart. Matthew's got it worse."
Donovan snorted, not caring about Matthew.
Charles checked his phone and frowned. "Why did Chloe block me on Facebook? I can't open her profile."
"Did you tick her off?" Donovan joked.
He opened WhatsApp to ask Chloe why she blocked Charles, but Chloe had sent a message: [I'm gone. Don't look for me.]
Donovan frowned and replied: [What do you mean?]
But before he could send it, he saw the dreaded red flag—he'd been blocked.
A sense of dread washed over him.
He tried calling Chloe, but her phone was disconnected.
He called the Verdania branch, urging them to check on Chloe.
Frantically, he reached out to every contact he had, including Chloe's roommate, Wade, who responded: [I don't know. She left a note saying she was gone. No clue where.]
Wade sent a photo of the note, which read: [Wade, my dear roommate, I'm leaving. Thanks for everything. Chloe.]
The Verdania branch called back, saying Chloe had withdrawn and canceled her student status. They had no idea where she went.
Donovan realized how serious this was. He remembered Chloe's determined look before she left. She had planned this all along.
He recalled a phone number for "Kathy" from a previous note, but it was disconnected. He went to Whispering Pines Inn to find Pamela, but she was on a world tour, and her phone was off.
Then the police called, "Mr. Blake, about the Amelia case notes you had copied—you need to destroy them. Did your messenger tell you? It's against policy."
He suddenly understood; Chloe must have seen it!
Donovan knew Chloe had learned the truth about Amelia's death but didn't know Janet's pregnancy had also hit her hard.
He clenched his fists, thinking, 'Chloe! You're so ruthless.'
He went to Verdania, but Chloe's apartment was spotless, like she had never been there. He remembered her studying at her desk, wearing her glasses.
He asked Wade, but Wade knew nothing and blamed Donovan, "Chloe was fine in Verdania. She disappeared after coming back from Maple Valley. It must be you! You slept with Janet. You're a terrible husband!"
Wade slammed the door.
Donovan gritted his teeth. He hadn't taken the Janet rumor seriously and thought Chloe wouldn't either.
Clearly, Chloe wasn't missing; she had planned this to avoid Donovan.
She was deliberately avoiding him!
Before she left, Donovan had said a lot to Chloe, but she didn't care and left anyway.
In this age of information, finding someone shouldn't be hard, but if she didn't want to be found, he'd let her go.
