Chapter 152 What? Interested?
During the meeting, Donovan, feeling restless, lit a cigarette.
Charles, noticing Donovan's bad mood, asked, "Donovan, should we continue this tomorrow?"
"No, let's continue," Donovan replied.
Charles proceeded to analyze the financial department's restructuring measures and various adjustments related to other departments.
By the end of the day, the entire company knew about the argument between Chloe and Donovan. Chloe's voice was particularly loud. According to eyewitness accounts, Chloe threatened Donovan with divorce. As for the specifics of the threat, it was unclear.
Chloe became the first person in history to shout at Donovan in his office.
[Chloe, you are too bold, daring to argue with Mr. Blake. A little quarrel is fine, but if you push him too far, he might really divorce you. What will you do then?]
A message from Sofia popped up on WhatsApp. Chloe was busy working and ignored it, thinking to herself: 'A divorce is inevitable anyway.'
However, just before leaving work, Chloe suddenly realized that she couldn't rely on Donovan to accompany her mother back to Sunshine Bay City. She would have to rely on someone else.
She texted Sofia.
Chloe: [Sofia, what are you doing for the New Year holiday?]
Sofia: [Nothing much, probably going home to catch up on shows. Nothing's going on with Logan. I feel like I can't connect with him emotionally. Even if I want to ask him out, I have no reason to.]
Sofia replied with a crying emoji.
Chloe: [For the New Year, my mom wants me to go back to Sunshine Bay City, to my grandma's house. But my mom has trouble walking, even going to the bus station is a problem. Why don't you ask Logan...]
Chloe found it difficult to ask directly. Her original intention was to rent a car and have Sofia drive, as she couldn't drive herself. However, seeing Sofia's interest in making progress with Logan, Chloe made the request, hoping to create an opportunity for the two of them.
Sofia: [Forget it, I'll do it. It makes perfect sense for me to accompany your mom.]
After work, Chloe and Sofia discussed the trip back to Sunshine Bay City as they reached the lobby. Donovan's car passed by the company entrance, with Charles sitting in it.
Formerly a junior and now a member of the C-suite, Charles naturally wanted to have a drink after work. Donovan saw Chloe at the entrance and then closed his eyes for a moment.
"Oh," Charles involuntarily exclaimed. "What's wrong?"
Donovan followed Charles' gaze and fixed his eyes on Chloe again. In his mind, he thought with some resentment: 'What a show off.'
"I feel like I've seen this girl somewhere before," Charles said, furrowing his brow, trying to recall her from his memory.
"Where have you seen her?" Donovan smirked.
"I can't remember."
"That might just be an excuse," Donovan remarked. Typically, this excuse was used in flirting.
"Do you know this girl's name, Donovan?" Charles asked.
"Her?" Donovan glanced at Chloe again, unsure of what she was discussing with Sofia. "Probably Chloe."
"So, she's your..." Charles was somewhat at a loss for words. "I almost fell for your trick. Isn't she going home with you?"
Charles only knew Donovan's wife was named Chloe, but the pieces didn't quite fit.
"No, she's going to her mother's house."
As the car drove away, Donovan saw Chloe waiting for the bus in the rearview mirror, her brow furrowed tightly. Donovan sneered inwardly. She was probably feeling sorry and anxious for Brayden.
With this in mind, Donovan sent a WhatsApp message to Jacob.
Donovan: [Has Brayden's situation been leaked to the media?]
Jacob's phone buzzed a few times.
Jacob: [It's been leaked. It will be in the headlines soon. Also, Donovan, is there a position available in the sales department?]
Jacob seemed to think he had done Donovan a favor and was now negotiating terms. But who said he hadn't just made a request to Jacob? Donovan knew Jacob was not straightforward and tended to conceal his true intentions.
Donovan: [There is.]
Donovan knew that Jacob's friends were not of high caliber, and he was only seeking a low-level sales position. These positions were perpetually available.
Jacob: [I have a cousin, Barbara, who is currently working in sales at the paper mill in Sunshine Bay City. She wants to work at New East Group. Can you arrange something for her? For family's sake.]
Donovan: [Sure. Let her start after the New Year.]
Jacob: [No interview required?]
Donovan: [No need.]
Jacob: [Then I'll have her come to Maple Valley after the New Year.]
Donovan: [Alright.]
