Chapter 217 She Married a Man with Such Responsibility
In a moment of carelessness, Chloe caught sight of the portrait of Amelia hanging in the living room.
Tears welled up in her eyes once more, but she quickly pushed the sadness aside.
She understood that Amelia's passing was connected to Donovan, and she couldn't afford to let him see her consumed by sorrow.
In the evening, Donovan inquired, "What are you in the mood for dinner?"
"Anything is fine," Chloe replied as she settled on the window seat. Once Donovan headed to the kitchen, she began texting Brayden on WhatsApp, asking about Karen's parents. Chloe made it clear that she preferred text messages over voice.
Brayden: [You can respond now. You gave me a fright.]
Chloe: [I'm fine.]
Brayden: [Karen has always been familiar with Ronald, but he never revealed her identity. She has always carried an air of mystery around her, intentionally kept low-key by Ronald. Over the years, Ronald has paid little attention to her. After being absent for some time and depleting all her resources, Karen returned to Maple Valley with the intention of extorting Ronald. However, Ronald refused to give in to her demands.]
Chloe: [Is the Blue Ocean Estate Group house Karen's?]
Brayden: [I don't know.]
Chloe guessed that Karen was likely Sarah's daughter. Last time, Gordon kept calling Amelia "Sarah," which might be related to Karen calling Amelia "mom."
On the day Gordon vanished, Donovan searched for him, and it's likely they were both in the house. Amelia's death couldn't have been accidental; it had to be murder, either by Donovan or Gordon.
Gordon sought retribution against Sarah for the harm she had caused him in the past.
Unfortunately, Chloe fainted at that moment and didn't make it upstairs to investigate. The neighborhood was still under construction, with few residents and lacking surveillance. Donovan's skills made it simple for him to manipulate things at the police station. Therefore, when Chloe visited the station, she couldn't uncover anything.
"Dinner's ready. Come to eat," Donovan said to Chloe.
"Okay," Chloe deleted all her chat records with Brayden.
"Don't starve yourself," he urged.
Donovan made two servings of pasta.
It was the first time Chloe had eaten food made by Donovan.
She had no appetite at all.
"Don't you like it?" he asked.
"It's okay. Did you kill Amelia, or was it Gordon?" Chloe toyed with the food in her bowl and asked calmly.
Then she raised her head and looked Donovan straight in the eyes.
Donovan immediately grabbed Chloe's chin and clenched his teeth, asking, "Chloe, what are you thinking?"
"It was Gordon who killed her, and you're taking the blame for Gordon! Just like back then, you took all the blame for him," Chloe stared into his eyes. "Gordon mistook Amelia for Sarah, and Karen calling her mom further confirms Gordon's mindset, right?"
The 24-year-old Chloe's eyes held a wise and icy light.
This kind of light had never appeared in her eyes before.
"Chloe, you think you're pretty smart, don't you?" Donovan reiterated.
Chloe turned her head, pulled away from Donovan's hold, and remarked, "No need. You're quite capable. Even if you confess, there's nothing I can do to stop you!
"Gordon isn't in this house. I killed Amelia because she always reminded Gordon of Sarah, driving him crazier!" Donovan put down his chopsticks and stared at Chloe.
Donovan admitted it, leaving Chloe at a loss for how to respond.
She just felt so sad inside.
But she had no way to deal with him.
Before this, she had even thought about having a child with him.
All those sweet memories, all his past actions, flooded back.
" Amelia never wronged you. She always told me not to bother you, not to request money from you, and not to allow Jacob to ask you for money. She was only trying to protect you!" Chloe yelled at Donovan.
Donovan remained silent and continued eating.
" Donovan, Amelia is my mother, and I waited six years for her to wake up. Unlike you, I have feelings for my parents and am not heartless towards them. Your indifference towards them is just a facade. Everyone values their parents!" Chloe's smile turned bitter as she recalled Donovan admitting to killing Amelia for Gordon, just like how he had previously despised Gordon's cowardice openly but still took the blame for him. She should be thankful for marrying a man who takes responsibility like Donovan does!
"I tried to improve your relationship with your parents, but what about you? You harmed my family," Chloe's eyes reddened. She slammed the fork on the table and went to the bedroom.
After locking the bedroom door, there was silence outside.
Suddenly, Donovan kicked the door open. Chloe kept her eyes closed, filled with regret.
She wished she had never crossed paths with Donovan and had no ties to him whatsoever.
He could just use Todd's eyes. Even if his embrace was warm, Chloe didn't want to accept it.
