Chapter 123 Blake, Your Wife is Here
The next morning, when Chloe arrived at work, Jacob was waiting for her at the entrance of the lobby, asking her to return the bag to him.
Chloe handed him the fake bag.
"Are you playing me, Chloe? I gave you the real one, but you’re giving me a fake one." Jacob gritted his teeth.
"A fake one? This is what you gave me. How would I know? Do you have any evidence?" Chloe pretended to be ignorant.
"Okay, Chloe, just wait," Jacob said, grumbling as he left without taking the bag.
Chloe went to the office.
James felt pathetic. He thought that capturing Chloe was a sure thing, considering how confident Ellie had been. But unexpectedly, a poor plan that had led to a great loss had occurred. It had not only led to Chloe being transferred to the auditing department but had also caused him to lose Ellie, his valuable assistant. He had no choice but to sacrifice a pawn to protect his king.
He sent a message to Chloe: [Chloe, Mr. Blake just called me and said you should start work in the auditing department on Monday.]
Chloe was stunned when she saw the message. [Really?]
[Yes, really. Congratulations, your wish is going to come true. Haven't you always wanted to join the auditing department?]
[Thank you, Director.]
Chloe went from not believing it to feeling unsettled. She sent a message to Donovan: [Thank you, honey.]
She also added many kiss and heart emojis.
Chloe couldn't stop smiling until she finished work. After getting in the car, she kissed Donovan's cheek affectionately. "How did you come up with the idea of sending me to the auditing department?" Chloe asked with a smile. She had given up any hope of joining the auditing department this year.
"Your reputation in the finance department is already ruined. It wouldn't be wise to ruin it further in the same place; it'll be better to change to a different department," Donovan said nonchalantly.
"You always love to mock me!" Chloe complained and looked out the window.
Not long after, Chloe remembered something. "Is there still a position available in the auditing department?"
Donovan had mentioned that he had no say in the hiring process for the auditing department.
"There is one," Donovan said.
In fact, it was a position he had arranged with the HR director.
Chloe felt relieved. Tomorrow would be Friday, so she could hand over her work in the finance department and start working in the auditing department the following week.
"You should work hard in the auditing department. It's the department I want to focus on developing," Donovan said seriously.
"Don't worry, I won't disappoint you," Chloe said, patting her chest.
On Friday, after completing the handover with the finance department, Chloe bid them farewell.
Chloe knew that in such a large company, many people, especially in the finance department, where there were many women, loved to gossip and backstab. Chloe disliked talking badly about others behind their backs and she disliked being the subject of gossip even more. She preferred an elite environment.
On Saturday, after visiting her mother, Chloe returned to her dorm and packed up her genuine Chanel handbag. Because it was quite expensive, she put it in a shopping bag.
Sofia was reluctant to return the bag. "You! Your brother gave you that for free. Why are you refusing it?”
"Are you dumb? He gave it to me for free, but I traded it with him. That's fraud, do you understand? I need to return it to Ellie quickly. What if she sues me? Ellie is furious right now. This can't wait," Chloe said.
Sofia deflated.
Chloe wanted Brayden give it to Ellie was because she had noticed that Ellie seemed to like Brayden.
Now she suddenly understood why Ellie had come to work at New East and why Ellie and Jacob set her up.
Chloe considered Brayden to be one of the prominent figures in Maple Valley. She couldn't invite him to a simple meal, and she couldn't embarrass Donovan, right?
So, she chose the high-end "Starlight Diner," which was known for its outstanding local cuisine.
She didn't choose a private room, but rather a table in the hall.
Chloe arrived early and placed her bag on the table. Brayden hadn't arrived yet, so Chloe lifted her wrist to check the time.
Coincidentally, Donovan and Mario Torres were having dinner in the upstairs private room today. Donovan invited had Mario Torres, a German man, out to enjoy an authentic local meal.
Because of the one-way transparent glass, they could see out from inside, but no one could see them inside.
With just a casual turn of his head, Mario Torres spotted Chloe.
"Oh, Donovan, looks like I see my new employee," Mario Torres said, spreading his hands.
"What?" Donovan followed Mario Torres' gaze and saw Chloe sitting downstairs with a canvas bag beside her. She had said that she was going out to see her mom this morning.
"She told me that she was going out to have dinner with her classmates today," Donovan pretended to say casually.
"A male classmate or a female classmate?" Mario Torres asked again.
"You'll know when they arrive," Donovan said, smiling.
Mario Torres saw through him but didn't reveal anything. He smiled and picked up his glass to drink some water.
Donovan's gaze also turned away and he stopped looking downstairs.
Soon, Brayden arrived with a box of chocolates in his hands.
"These are for you. I bought them from out of town," Brayden pushed the chocolates toward Chloe.
"Your wife's guest has arrived," Mario Torres said to Donovan. "Do you know him?"
Donovan glanced sideways and a smile appeared on his face. "Brayden is a teacher from the accounting training class. She passed her economic law exam. She invited the teacher out for a meal. She told me about it this morning, but I didn't pay much attention to it."
"Oh, really?" Mario Torres said again. "But Mrs. Blake told me that she won't have children in the next five years."
"Is that related to our topic today?" Donovan laughed again.
Only Donovan knew how forced his laughter was today. His heart was affected, but he had to pretend to be fine in front of Mario Torres.
