Chapter 131 I Was Her Husband

Chloe turned around and saw Ann emerging from another private room. Donovan recognized Ann as the person who had interviewed Chloe at the café, and she was also from Brayden's firm. Feeling a bit displeased, Donovan said to Chloe, "I'll wait in the car."

Ann didn't mind Donovan's attitude and started chatting with Chloe. Although they had only met briefly, Chloe found Ann likable, with a genuine smile and a clear heart.

"What brings you here? Aren't you at work?" Chloe asked Ann.

"I quit," Ann replied with a hint of frustration. "You know Ellie, right? She's from your New East."

"I do."

"She's Brayden's assistant now, always bossing everyone around. Brayden listens to her, not us senior accountants. Several of us have quit. I can't stand it. I thought Brayden was different." Ann crossed her arms as she spoke.

Chloe also fell into deep thought. Could it be because of her? Ellie had something on Chloe. Brayden, fearing Ellie would expose it, had been accommodating her. In a way, Ann lost her job because of Chloe, and Chloe felt partly responsible.

"What are your plans? Are you looking for a new job?" Chloe asked Ann.

"Not yet. I'm going to travel first and then look around. At my age, and with my position as an accountant, it's not easy to find something suitable," Ann replied with a bitter smile. "It's a pity. I’m a top ten accountant in Maple Valley, and I got pushed out by Ellie who just started working."

Seeing Ann's distressed look, Chloe said, "I'll keep an eye out for job opportunities for you."

"Take care of yourself," Ann replied before leaving.

After Chloe got into the car, Donovan asked, "What did you talk about?"

"Not much. She quit and hasn't found a new job yet," Chloe replied.

"Why did she quit?" Chloe didn't mention Brayden's situation, afraid that Donovan would be concerned. She simply said, "I suppose she was fed up."

The two of them then went back to the office. Paisley was waiting in Donovan's office, wiping her tears with a tissue.

"What's wrong?" Donovan took off his coat and hung it on the rack.

"Donovan, you were doing fine. Why did you agree to a marriage of convenience? Was it because of your grandfather? You didn't have to do it. You could have chosen me instead," Paisley said, trying her best to undermine Donovan and Chloe's marriage, making it seem dispensable.

"You're a public figure."

"You didn't even tell me. When will your agreement with Chloe end?" Paisley asked insincerely. "No wonder you haven't had any children."

"Why should it end? There's no deadline," Donovan replied, lighting a cigarette and staring at Paisley intently.

Paisley was taken aback. "No deadline? Then why have an agreement in the first place? Or are you waiting for your grandfather?"

"It has nothing to do with my grandfather. I fell in love with her and naturally got married. Why are you bringing up a marriage of convenience?" Donovan raised an eyebrow, his expression carrying a subversive power.

Paisley didn't know how to respond. "Is that so? In that case, I wish you a lifetime of happiness. I haven't finished shooting my advertisement, and your company's employees should be coming back to work. I'll go downstairs to continue."

After saying that, Paisley left. She narrowed her eyes maliciously. If it was a marriage of convenience, Donovan must be doing it for his grandfather. Donovan's silence was probably because he didn't want his grandfather to know. So, does it mean that their marriage of convenience will end when his grandfather passes away? That must be it! Paisley's mind was spinning, and it seemed that the grandfather was the key. If the grandfather died, their marriage would end.

Just as Paisley left, a melodious tune came from inside Donovan's coat. It was seemingly Chloe's phone ringtone, as Donovan's phone was on the table. Donovan took Chloe's phone from his coat and answered it. It was a call from Riley.

"Chloe, Chloe, your mom woke up. She just spoke to me," Riley said excitedly.

Donovan had initially thought of calling the internal line to ask Chloe to get her phone. However, considering what Amelia had said that day, he wanted to visit Amelia first. "I'm Chloe's husband. Her phone was in my pocket," Donovan said.

"Okay," Riley said, still excited. "Tell Chloe her mom woke up."

"I'll go check on her. She's at work."

"Alright. I'll wait for you." Riley hung up.
