Chapter 651 Just Wait
Donovan grinned as the car pulled up to Pearl Peak City.
"Hey, I need to see someone first. You cool with that, Ms. Rose?" Donovan asked Charlotte, catching her eye in the rearview mirror.
"No problem at all!" She replied quickly, not wanting to disagree.
"Who are we meeting?" Charles asked, still in the dark about Donovan's plans.
"My grandpa's old buddy."
"Is that why we're here in Pearl Peak City?"
"Don't ask. We're here. I already set it up." Donovan said, parking in front of SavorySpoon Restaurant, an Aurora-style place Oscar had picked. Donovan didn't mind the choice.
Charles took a look and frowned a bit; it seemed kinda low-end.
But inside, it was a whole different vibe, with birds chirping and flowers blooming, like stepping into nature.
Oscar was already there waiting.
"Oscar, meet my friends," Donovan introduced Charles and Charlotte. "We’ve got some business here. Feel free to speak openly."
Oscar sighed, "It's bad, Cynthia's been arrested, and Jake's got no one to look after him. The cops are looking for someone, Mr. Blake. Honestly, you should take care of Jake yourself from now on. Just my two cents. You said Jake's leg got hurt, and I heard Cynthia didn't even cover him with a blanket at night. You're right; Jake's issues aren't natural; Cynthia caused them. How could this happen?"
Oscar slapped the table, looking devastated, "The world's moral standards are just going downhill!"
Soon, Oscar was in tears again.
Charlotte, not knowing the backstory or Oscar, just stared blankly, glancing at Charles and wondering who this awful person could be.
Charles got it; it was probably Cynthia. He didn't know the details but could guess.
Charlotte kept eating the same dish.
"Do you like that?" Charles asked her.
"Yeah, it's pretty good."
"Alright, let's drop the sad stuff." Donovan said, glancing at Charlotte. "After Jeffery left, did the school give you any new grad students?"
Charlotte coughed, almost choking.
The dish was loaded with chili and vinegar, so naturally, she coughed.
"What happened?" Charles handed her a napkin and poured her some water.
"Thanks," Charlotte said.
"Yeah, they did. The two grad students Chloe was supervising got assigned to me. Supervising them is no big deal. You mentioned Jeffery, sigh." Oscar shook his head.
Charlotte took another bite but stopped, thinking, 'What's up with Jeffery? Just say it, stop shaking your head!'
"Jeffery's doing pretty well now," Donovan said casually, sipping his tea.
There was a key word in his sentence: "now," hinting that things weren't always good for Jeffery.
Charles got Donovan's drift. One reason for coming to Pearl Peak City was to dig into Jeffery's past, and who better to ask than his old professor? A respected professor wouldn't lie.
Donovan was sharp, planning every move.
Charles just sat there, waiting.
