Chapter 42 He Knew Everything

Before long, Chloe's WhatsApp lit up with a message from Zoey: [Yes, it's him. And he's pretty handsome.]

Chloe furrowed her brow, perplexed at how Donovan could have been in Andrew Price's place. ‘How did he know Andrew Price? Could Donovan have read her diary? Was it the day she asked him to find her license?’

Chloe swiftly sent a message to Maya on WhatsApp: [Maya, the day you helped me find my license, did you get it from my suitcase?]

Before Maya could respond, Donovan appeared.

"Mr. Blake, Ms. Chloe here would like to discuss a price with you. She needs two hundred units," James commented.

"Oh? Since she's an employee of my company, what does she need two hundred computers for?" Donovan asked with a composed smile, his eyes betraying an inscrutability.

Sofia was so startled that she shivered.

Logan couldn't figure out what Donovan was playing at. He guessed that maybe Donovan didn't want to reveal to his subordinates that the two of them knew each other, trying instead to extract more information from them. Unwittingly, Logan had become Donovan's "undercover agent."

"Oh, it's like this. I had a boyfriend, Andrew Price, who was teaching in Elmrest Springs. It was his dream to donate two hundred computers to the elementary school he was teaching at. Sadly, he sacrificed his life trying to save a child from drowning. I want to fulfill his wish," Chloe said with grace.

Since Donovan seemed to be aware of it, she figured it was better to just come out with it.

"Is that so?" Donovan said with a smile. "That means you had a good relationship with your ex."

Chloe paused—their relationship was meticulously documented by Andrew in her diary. There was no point in hiding it now, "Very deep. We were talking about marriage."

Sofia didn't know what was going on. She gave Chloe's hand a worried squeeze, admonishing her as if she were crazy for provoking Donovan's jealousy intentionally.

Donovan's eyes narrowed, and the chill in them deepened.

Upon learning about Chloe's past love, Donovan's emotions were roiled.
Chloe's speech often carried a hint of provocation, especially when it came to her blatant dislike of Donovan.

"Oh really? But the price for those two hundred computers isn't low. Even so, it would still cost several hundred thousand dollars. You're young. unless you come from a well-to-do family, how could you come up with such a sum?" Donovan eyed Chloe.

"It's my savings!" Chloe insisted with righteous fervor.

"Oh? Savings?" Donovan chuckled. "To save money, you have to earn it first. How did you manage that?" Chloe's face turned pale.

In front of Sofia, Logan, and James, she could not bring herself to reveal her embarrassment.

She had earned the money from Donovan himself through a sacrifice of her own dignity.

"Mr. Blake, though Chloe works in finance and is meticulous with her accounting, it's impossible for her to embezzle funds. Moreover, she isn't a cashier who handles cash directly. You have to believe Chloe," Sofia urged, sensing that Donovan suspected the legitimacy of Chloe's money and rushed to her defense.

Chloe, working in finance, was in a sensitive position.

Hearing Sofia's words, Logan realized why Donovan had insisted they keep their acquaintance a secret. He likely wanted to figure out exactly where Chloe's money had come from.

"Is that so? Since the donation is for the mountain schools, let's say it's a gift from the New East Group. The company will foot the bill and relieve you of the pressure," Donovan said with ease.

Chloe clenched her fists and nodded slightly in response.

Though she didn't have to spend her money, she was not pleased. She had hoped that when the children at the Elementary School used the computers, they would think of her and Andrew Price. Now, they would instead associate their gratitude with New East Group and Donovan.

Donovan was cunning and strategic. Chloe was effectively reduced to a mere pawn.

Donovan instructed James to order two hundred computers and have them delivered to the Elmrest Springs area promptly.

"What about the address? You're not going to provide an address?" Donovan queried, slightly furrowing his brow, looking at Chloe.
"Oh, I know," Logan said. "It was near Elmrest Springs Elementary that I ran into Chloe last time."

"Really? When?" Donovan asked Logan with a smile, his gaze flitting over to Chloe.

The coincidences were piling up.

"I remember it clear as day on Monday. The address is Elmrest Springs Elementary."

Chloe's face had turned pale. Today, Donovan had got her good, exposing all her secrets, including why she hadn't answered his call the day she went to pick up Samuel. It was because she had gone to Elmrest Springs.

Maya's WhatsApp message finally came through. [Ma'am, I was cleaning earlier and just saw your WhatsApp. I found your license in the canvas bag you washed, and Mr. Blake checked your luggage.]
Donovan knew everything.
