Chapter 407 I Had an Ulterior Motive

After two stressful months, graduation finally came. In July, Chloe moved to Pearl Peak City. As a recruited talent, she got the perks of an associate professor but was still officially a lecturer. She couldn't supervise grad students on her own and had to assist Ethan. She taught accounting to both undergrads and grads in the finance department.

The university gave Chloe a clean two-bedroom apartment. One day, she cleaned her new place and went to the supermarket for essentials. She took a taxi back, but since it was summer break, cars without a pass couldn't enter the campus freely. Chloe had to get off at the school gate, standing there with a bunch of stuff.

She wore a white blouse and a long brown skirt, her waist-length hair flowing down her back. With a slender waist and no glasses, she was a refreshing sight in the summer, hard to ignore. Chloe thought of leaving her things at the gate and asking the security guard to watch them while she made multiple trips. As she bent down, her hair fell over her shoulder.

In the sunlight, the scene appeared almost like a masterpiece of an oil painting.

So much so that a young man in the distance was inspired to capture this moment, hoping to preserve its beauty forever.

After standing up, Chloe asked the security guard, "I live in Willow Grove Estates. I can't carry everything in one trip. Could you please watch the rest of my things for me?" The guard nodded, but then they heard a noise. "What?"

Chloe turned and saw a tall, energetic young man on a mountain bike with a basketball strapped to the back. He wore blue basketball shorts, his shirt draped over his shoulder, and his tanned skin glistened with sweat, full of youth and energy. He looked at Chloe and said, "I'm a finance student. Need help?"

He had just ridden over and guessed Chloe had too much to carry. "You?" Chloe glanced at his bike. "Yeah, come on." He took a net bag from his pocket, put the basketball in it, and hung it on the handlebars. He loaded as much of Chloe's stuff as he could on his bike. Chloe carried two pots, and they walked towards the campus.

"Which dorm building are you going to?" he asked. "Willow Grove Estates," Chloe replied. The young man looked surprised. "Do you have relatives there?" "No, I live there."

"You?" The young man looked at Chloe again. "Are you the new teaching assistant?"

Chloe smiled softly. "Yeah, something like that. You're good at compliments."

"I wasn't trying to." He looked at her.

Chloe just smiled and kept her thoughts to herself, thinking, 'This guy calling me a teaching assistant is quite the compliment. a postgraduate student can be a teaching assistant to undergraduates. It means he thinks I'm no older than twenty-five. For any woman, that's a huge compliment—after all, staying young forever is every woman's dream.'

"You said you're in the finance department? Why didn't you go home for the summer break? Or did you come back early?" Chloe asked.

"Yeah, I just got into the grad program. I was playing basketball at a nearby university. There's a game when the semester starts."

"You're a grad student? What's your focus?"

"Investment."

"Oh." Chloe thought, 'If he were my grad student, I'd definitely help him out for this.' "So, you're Mr. Reynolds' student."

"You know Mr. Reynolds?" He looked surprised.

"He's famous. Who doesn't know him? It's lucky to study under him."

When Chloe first came to the university, Oscar Reynolds was one of her referees. She knew his reputation well.

"Oh, I thought you were new and didn't know anyone," he said.

"By the way, what's your name?"

"Jeffery."

"Got it. I'll remember you." Chloe's tone was that of a teacher talking to a student.

She didn't know how Jeffery felt about her.

They arrived at Willow Grove Estates, a three-story building without an elevator. Since Chloe was young, she was assigned to the third floor, which meant she had to carry her things upstairs herself.

Jeffery looked at her. "Looks like it's too much for you alone. I'll help you carry them up."

"Thank you," Chloe said, thinking, 'I'll definitely put in a good word for you with Oscar.'

Jeffery also helped Chloe install light fixtures and tidy up the flower pots on the balcony. Looking at her refreshed home, Chloe smiled with satisfaction. "Thank you, Jeffery."

"No need to thank me. I had an ulterior motive. I wanted to get to know you," he said, looking at her.

Chloe thought, 'This young man is quite handsome and charming. His straightforward gaze is unforgettable. He has very affectionate eyes.' But she always took Jeffery's liking for her as a joke.

She smiled. "Alright. Thank you."

Jeffery put his hands in his pockets, draped his vest over his shoulder, and walked away whistling.
