Chapter 138 I Couldn't Find Happiness

Chloe sat downstairs, quietly eating. "Save some for him," she said to Maya. Her joy was tempered by Donovan's sudden anger. Her grandfather tried to comfort her, engaging her in conversation. Chloe, however, struggled to maintain her composure.

After the meal, Chloe received a message from Ann: "I applied for the position of financial director at New East Group today." Chloe was genuinely happy for Ann. "Brayden suggested it. I shouldn't have agreed, but I'll consider it."

Chloe replied back with a smiley face. "Great, we can work together," Ann responded.

Unaware that the official recruitment process hadn't begun, Chloe went upstairs. Donovan, putting down his book, asked, "When should I visit your mother?"

Chloe was taken aback. "Really? I never forced you."

"When?" Donovan's tone grew impatient.

"How about today or tomorrow?"

Donovan agreed, leaving Chloe with a sense of unease. She wondered what to expect during his visit. "Don't tell my mom about our arrangement. I'm afraid it will hurt her," Chloe said, holding Donovan's arm.

"I won't," he assured her.

Chloe felt relieved, but she sensed that Donovan's visit might signify something significant.

The next day, Chloe and Donovan went to the hospital. As they approached Amelia's ward, they saw Jacob by her bedside. Chloe, recalling Jacob's words from the previous day, deliberately held onto Donovan's arm.

"Oh, so both Chloe and Donovan are here!" Jacob teased.

Chloe ignored him and went to Amelia's side. Seeing Amelia struggling to breathe, Chloe knew Jacob had upset her again. She pushed Jacob, "Why do you make Mom angry? She's just woken up and is still weak!"

Amelia, hearing Chloe's voice, opened her eyes, no longer angry. Then she noticed Donovan beside Chloe. "And who is this?" Amelia pretended not to recognize Donovan.

"Mom, this is my husband, Donovan, and also my boss, Donovan," Chloe introduced.

Jacob let out a disdainful snort from behind. Chloe knew it would be difficult for Donovan to address Amelia as "mom," so she didn't insist.

"Chloe has told me about you, a promising young man," Amelia said, looking at Donovan. Donovan and Amelia's gaze held a depth that suggested they had met before.

"Is that so?" Donovan's lips twitched, a forced smile appearing.

"Chloe, quickly get a chair for Donovan," Amelia instructed. There was a sofa in the room with only one chair, occupied by Jacob.

Just as Chloe was about to fetch another chair, Jacob spoke up, "Mom, where will you live after you're discharged? Seeing as your daughter is being so filial, why don't you go live with her? Why should I have tosqueeze with you in such a small house? Besides, I already have a girlfriend, so it's inconvenient for you to stay with me, isn't it?"

"Jacob..." Chloe scolded him sternly. It turned out that their argument earlier was about this matter, but the suite was originally registered in their parents' names.

"Chloe, let him go!" Amelia suppressed her anger.

"If this isn't resolved today, I won't leave," Jacob said, sitting there with one leg crossed, acting stubborn.

Seeing the situation about to escalate, Donovan proposed a solution. "Why don't I buy two four-bedroom apartments, one for Amelia and one for Jacob? That should solve the problem." His voice was cold. He should have been happy to find a way to repay his savior, but he couldn't find any joy.
