Chapter 494 Derek

When Chloe left the front desk, the staff handed her a business card, which she just tossed into her bag without a second thought. She headed to Derek's room, and he opened the door for her.

Derek, tall and wearing glasses, had this super polished and professional vibe that made people trust him instantly. Plus, he was really good-looking, like the kind of handsome that came with being smart.

"You done with checking in?" Derek said, just in a white shirt.

"Yeah," Chloe replied.

Although they hadn't seen each other for a while, their tones sounded like they had just seen each other yesterday. There was this unspoken understanding and trust between them that was hard for others to get.

"I found some stuff. Come check it out," Derek said, hitting the play button on the TV. Photos and videos started playing on the screen.

"These are all pics of Pamela and Bradley Adams. Bradley's been stuck in bed for years. Pamela's back in Emerald Isle, so you're safe for now. As for why she's after you, it’s tied to your background. But you're definitely not Kathy's daughter. If you were, Pamela wouldn't be gunning for you like this. The only explanation is you're the daughter of someone on her level, and they're enemies," Derek explained. "But who your parents are is still a mystery. Even I couldn't dig that up."

Chloe kept watching, thinking, 'I've known for a while that searching my background is a wild goose chase. Pamela's not gonna spill the beans.'

"And about that mole on Pamela's ear, she probably had it removed. These are all the photos of Pamela I could find." Derek showed Chloe the photos one by one.

There were tons of photos and videos, and it was past midnight by the time they were done. Chloe was beat. "I need to sleep. Goodnight, Derek."

"Did you see him?" Derek asked just as Chloe reached the door.

Chloe paused, knowing exactly who Derek meant. "Yeah, I saw him."

"Remember what I told you?" Derek said, standing behind her, calm as ever.

Chloe nodded slowly.

"Still no answer? Or you just don't have one?" Derek asked.

Chloe kept her back to him, then nodded and shook her head.

"Go ahead," Derek said.

Chloe went back to her room, exhausted. She headed to the bathroom for a shower, but her mind was elsewhere. Even though it was late, she wasn't sleepy. Memories from three years ago started flooding back.

She felt depressed and conflicted. Pamela's constant pressure was suffocating. She liked Donovan, but it wasn't deep love yet. Still, what he did to her family was unforgivable. Studying was even harder because getting a PhD from Emerald Isle in just one year meant she had to cram all the courses into that time, which was insanely stressful.

Every night, lying in bed alone, she felt this huge emptiness, a loneliness she couldn't shake. She often cried until dawn. On a classmate's suggestion, she finally walked into a psychological clinic. When she entered, her face was full of anxiety.

The psychologist Derek was also the founder of the UC psychological clinic.
