Chapter 479 Your Boyfriend?
Carol stood a few steps behind Brayden, looking all serious. She was a whole different person now compared to when Chloe was still hanging around Maple Valley.
A few folks glanced over, but since everyone here was some big-brain intellectual, no one gave a damn about petty drama. They quickly went back to schmoozing and making bank.
Carol rocked a light gray business suit and gold-rimmed glasses, giving off that "don't mess with me" vibe.
"Carol, cut it out!" Brayden snapped.
Carol straight-up ignored him and marched over to Chloe. "Long time no see, Ms. Baker."
"Yeah, long time," Chloe replied.
"So, Ms. Baker, why'd you hug my boyfriend the second you saw him?" Carol shot back.
"Your boyfriend?" Chloe was pretty sure they weren't a thing. Brayden, standing behind Carol, just shook his head.
"Yep, Ms. Baker. You're divorced now, so it's none of our business. But if you're hunting for a new man, don't go after mine. If you do, then you are..." Carol gave Chloe the once-over, "Then you are a bad woman!"
Carol believed with Chloe being MIA from Maple Valley for so many years, she must have broken ties with Donovan, and that made her an easy target. Hence, Carol didn't plan to let Chloe off.
"Chill out," Chloe fired back. "It was just a friendly hug. If Ms. Scott can't handle that, then Mr. Perez's future is gonna be rough, and you'll be shooting yourself in the foot too!"
With that, Chloe turned and walked off.
After the forum wrapped up, reporters were chasing down some big names at the buffet. It was all live-streamed. But Donovan still caught the scene of Chloe and Brayden hugging in the background and just sneered.
Chloe got back to her room, took a shower, and flopped onto the bed, sulking. She grabbed her phone and saw a long WhatsApp message from Brayden, explaining his deal with Carol.
Carol was from a rich family and probably learned early on that marriage for people like her was all about utility, not love. Her parents used each other, and she was used to it. Over the years, Brayden had been killing it in finance and accounting, and since they were business partners, Carol thought he was her boyfriend. She even had Virgil propose to him for her. His parents thought Carol was great, but he disagree.
Brayden still had a thing for Chloe, even though they hadn't talked in years. His parents' approval of Chloe didn't mean squat if Brayden wasn't on board. So, for years, Carol had been parading around as "Brayden's fiancée," and Brayden never called her out. It would've been super embarrassing for Carol if he did.
After reading, Chloe tossed her phone aside. Three years had changed her perspective big time.
Saoirse and Isabel popped into Chloe's room to chat about which parts of today's forum could be useful for their project. They'd heard about the drama but didn't know the details and didn't pry.
Just then, Chloe's phone rang. She picked it up.
