Chapter 399 A Big Misunderstanding
Just when Chloe was feeling down, Barbara showed up. Chloe was surprised at how popular Barbara had become. Someone even asked for her autograph as soon as she walked in. Barbara sat across from Chloe.
"It's been a while, Chloe," Barbara said.
Chloe ignored her and looked out the window. If murder were legal, Chloe would have killed Barbara long ago.
“Chloe, I really advise you to stay away from Donovan. Just look at what he did to Amelia. He pushed her down the stairs and then had the audacity to insult her during summation! And don't even get me started on Jacob—Donovan slept with his crush, Janet, and got her pregnant. Now she doesn't want to have the baby, but he's insisting she goes through with it, despite her heart condition. And trust me, when it comes to you, it's no different!"
Chloe wondered how Barbara knew about the court details and Janet's heart condition. Only someone working for Pamela would know that. Chloe suspected Janet, Kathy, and Barbara were all working for Pamela to drive her away.
Barbara's submission to Pamela was easy to understand—Pamela was a big shot in the film industry, and Barbara had always dreamed of being a star.
Donovan had claimed that Pamela wouldn't do anything drastic. However, it seemed she not only acted but was also ramping up her plans. Chloe realized that if this continued, it wouldn't just be her who would be caught in the crossfire—Donovan and Francis would be in trouble too.
"Tell your boss I'm going to Verdania and never coming back," Chloe said.
"Oh, Chloe, what are you talking about? I don't understand," Barbara said, but she was clearly pleased. She hated seeing Chloe succeed in Maple Valley.
Chloe smirked and walked away.
At the Presidential Suite at Whispering Pines Inn, a man in a black suit called Pamela. He said Barbara reported that Chloe was going to Verdania and wouldn't return.
"Let's hope she keeps her promise. If she comes back, it'll be worse for her," Pamela said, hanging up.
Pamela sat gracefully on the sofa, with Kathy and Janet standing in front of her.
"Did you do as I instructed?" Pamela asked.
"Yes, Ms. Adams. Whether she believes I'm her mother or that Janet is pregnant with Donovan's child, the records are real. Even if she checks with the police, the records exist. She'll think Janet is pregnant with Donovan's child and that Janet has a heart condition and will die if she aborts. With such a big misunderstanding, they won't be together," Kathy said.
Pamela smiled. "Good! Leaving a loved one is one of life's greatest pains. Let her give up Francis and Donovan! I want her to feel like she's living a life worse than death. After all, her biological mother was once so glorious!
"Janet, you did well. Here's a check for 500 thousand dollars," Pamela said, handing it to Janet.
"Thank you, Ms. Adams," Janet said.
"The task of seducing Donovan is over for now. Unless I give the order, don't contact him privately," Pamela told Janet.
Janet bit her lip. "Okay," she said, though she was reluctant. No one would want to give up a man like Donovan.
Janet's situation was similar to Chloe's, both driven by family needs. Chloe married Donovan because Amelia was sick, while Janet did it because her brother, Elbert, had uremia, and her payment as a nursewasn't enough for treatment. The difference was Chloe married Donovan, while Janet was used by Pamela. Their lives took different paths from then on.
Just then, Janet's phone rang. It was an unknown number.
