Chapter 47 A Very Important Person

"Thinking of quitting?" Clearly angered by the incident, Chloe's behavior had rattled Donovan.
He lit a cigarette and slammed his lighter onto the desk.

"You think the umbrella I got you is a fake?" Chloe questioned sulkily.
"You're sharp," Blake said, squinting at her.

But the look in his eyes was one Chloe couldn't quite decipher.
"Look at this. Is it fake or not?" Chloe's temper flared even more, realizing Donovan had been swayed by Paisley's insinuation, too easily persuaded.

Chloe pulled out her phone and scrolled through her chat history with her classmate, Victoria.
"Just last Friday, I transferred Victoria over a thousand dollars. She got euros, which amounts to over one thousand in our currency. She doesn't even do retail, it's a favor, and she couldn't find a counterfeit source even if she wanted to! What else could it be besides the real deal?" After speaking her piece, Chloe stuffed her phone into her pocket. Donovan's anger cooled down.

Chloe had scrolled quickly, but he had caught a glimpse of the conversation.
[Who's the umbrella for? So expensive?]
[It's for someone very important.]
[Your boyfriend, maybe?]
Chloe didn't reply.
And so, in her eyes, he was a very important person.

"So?" Donovan's demeanor softened considerably.
He should have realized earlier that Paisley was just stirring trouble, but his ability to discern the authenticity of the umbrella was limited. And Chloe loved money.

Chloe remembered when Donovan had made her move to the next room to sleep because of something Paisley had said, and she couldn't quell her anger. "So, you make me move to sleep in the next room, that was your fault. You were nitpicking, duplicitous, listening to idle gossip." She accused.

"What's the matter? Not comfortable sleeping alone? Can't sleep?" Donovan spoke with a teasing tone.

"It's utterly unjust." Chloe retorted.

"Want to move back into my bedroom?" Donovan continued.

"Don't flatter yourself!" Chloe said with a defiant tilt of her head.

But truth be told, Chloe had been a bit scared last night. After all, the Blake family's mansion was so large, and she had never entered that particular bedroom before when she stayed with the Blake family. It was unfamiliar to her, and naturally, she felt a bit scared being there alone.

"If you want to move back into my bedroom, there are conditions, and it depends on how you behave," Donovan said, the corner of his lips raised in a slight smirk.

Chloe scoffed at the idea of depending on her behavior—there was no clear standard for it. It all relied on his whims.

"I'll get used to sleeping alone, eventually," she said, with a hint of fury in her tone.

"Oh? Seems like you really aren't adjusting. Is it because something's missing?" Donovan was usually reserved and seldom bantered with people. Let alone making such racy comments.

"Missing you, isn't that it? Mr. Blake, isn't that what you're trying to get me to admit, just to satisfy your vanity? Anyway, since you moved me to the next room to sleep, I also embarrassed you in class. We're even," Chloe said, looking up defiantly.

"What exactly are you finding hard to adjust to without me?" Donovan pressed on.

Chloe's face turned red, and she made to leave.

"If you had bought the real umbrella, why didn't you say so from the start? Why wait until making a scene about it?" Donovan wanted to continue teasing Chloe.

"It was to embarrass you, obviously!" Chloe replied with ease.

Just then, there was a knock at the door.

Donovan's voice shifted back to his professional tone as he called out a firm and authoritative. "Come in."

The person who walked in was James Turner, who had been eavesdropping outside.

The whole company was abuzz with Chloe sleeping during the training session. As a director, he should've taken measures and had come to ask Donovan's opinion.

But now he had overheard the exchange about the argument from the day before over the umbrella issue.
Mr. Blake probably accused Chloe of not caring enough about him, as she supposedly bought him a fake product, leading him to send Chloe to sleep in the adjacent room. That statement revealed a lot.

It implied that Chloe had previously shared a bed with Mr. Blake, though it was unclear for how long. Furthermore, Mr. Blake's earlier comments were frankly unbearable to hear.

Unexpectedly, Mr. Blake was capable of making such jokes.

Despite the office gossip that Mr. Blake gave Chloe a ride every day, James Turner believed that with Chloe's status, how could she have ended up in Mr. Blake's bed? Turns out, it was true.

Normally, Mr. Blake was exceedingly mature and composed. New employees at the company would tremble at the sight of him. Yet he made lewd comments in front of Chloe.

Chloe dared to sleep in front of him.
Reflecting on his own behavior, James Turner felt worried. He had misunderstood a trivial quarrel for the truth, making things difficult for Chloe unnecessarily.

"Good morning, James," said Chloe, turning her head as she was about to head back to the office, greeting James Turner. James nodded at Chloe.

Chloe was surprised. James Turner was not one to easily engage with others.
‘Why did he acknowledge her this time?’ Chloe pondered.
