Chapter 155 Her Lucky Year
After leaving her uncle's house, Chloe finally breathed a sigh of relief. The atmosphere at her uncle's house had been very oppressive and uncomfortable.
As Chloe walked slowly, she thought of her argument with Donovan and remembered Brayden.
Passing by a 24-hour convenience store, she casually peeked inside and saw someone buying cigarettes. He looked like Brayden.
Chloe stood outside, waiting.
The person turned around and lit a cigarette.
Indeed, it was Brayden, and he also saw Chloe.
Meeting at this moment was somewhat awkward. Chloe felt guilty toward Brayden. After all, he was framed by Ellie because of her.
"Brayden, what are you doing here?" Chloe asked him.
"I... I happened to be here on a business trip," Brayden said somewhat awkwardly.
Chloe felt like he was deliberately hiding something.
Among the several suburban cities in Maple Valley, Sunshine Bay City was the least populous and economically underdeveloped place. It wasn't a place to do business.
"Brayden, I'm sorry," Chloe said with her head down.
As they walked and talked, Brayden asked, "Why do you keep saying that? It's not your fault."
"By the way, do you know who did this?" Chloe asked again.
"I led the wolf into the room, probably Ellie. Actually, she didn't threaten me because of you. After all, I paid her, and she has no evidence. It's very difficult to gather evidence. I told her that before. This time, I don't know what's gotten into her. After this incident, she didn't say anything. I probably played straight into her hands," Brayden said coldly. "But we haven't..."
"Haven't what?" Chloe inquired.
Brayden's tone softened. "I thought of you, how you pricked yourself with a needle. Such strong willpower. The video was maliciously edited."
Chloe thought to herself: 'He doesn't suspect Jacob, and probably wouldn't suspect Donovan either.'
Chloe hated herself for still thinking about Donovan at a time like this and wanting to clear his name.
"By the way, why are you in Sunshine Bay City?" Brayden asked Chloe.
"My mom recovered and wanted to visit my grandmother. My grandmother is from Sunshine Bay City. Her house is small and can't accommodate so many people, so I'm staying at a hotel nearby," Chloe explained.
Brayden earnestly turned his head. "Is it safe for a girl to stay alone?"
"Sofia came with me. She's waiting for me," Chloe replied.
Noticing Chloe's red hands, Brayden instinctively took her hand and frowned. "What happened to your hand?"
"It's nothing. I was washing clothes for my grandmother." Chloe quickly withdrew her hand.
Brayden then said, "Let me walk you there."
Chloe agreed.
They walked slowly.
"How's your financial cost management review going? It's your last review. Don't slack off. Take a good look at the notes I gave you. Once you pass the exam, you'll be able to negotiate a better salary," Brayden advised Chloe with emphasis. "The audit department at New East Group is excellent. Your future is bright."
Brayden kept praising New East Group, which made Chloe feel emotional. She squeezed her palm. "Okay."
Barbara watched from behind. When the man in front turned his head just now, why did he look so much like the male lead in the 'Office Romance' photos?
Unfortunately, the streetlights weren't bright enough for her to see clearly.
If it was him, that would be great!
Chloe was in big trouble this time, no wonder she had to leave her husband at home.
Barbara was quite pleased with herself.
At that moment, fireworks lit up ahead, signaling the new year.
Chloe saw the fireworks and smiled.
"They're so beautiful," she sincerely remarked.
"Do you like them?" Brayden asked.
"Yes, I really do," Chloe replied to Brayden.
"After this year, I'll be thirty. Chloe, how about you?" Brayden turned to look at Chloe.
"I'll be twenty-four."
"Twenty-four? Then I'll get you something when the time comes," Brayden said.
It wasn't that Brayden only wanted to give gifts and forgot about being resented. He knew very well what would happen if Donovan found out he gave something to Chloe. But this year, he really wanted to give something to her. Most importantly, although he had feelings for her, they were entirely platonic. Why should he avoid it?
"You don't have to," Chloe said, somewhat startled and quickly waved her hand.
"Wait and see."
Brayden was happy. Although he had encountered such a situation, online matters were temporary. Tomorrow, others might forget, but today, he unexpectedly met Chloe far from Maple Valley, in a kind of unexpected twist of fate.
Chloe and Brayden stood there watching the fireworks, creating a romantic atmosphere between them.
Barbara thought to herself: 'Could it be that the male lead was apologizing to Chloe for what he did?'
Only after the fireworks ended did Brayden accompany Chloe to the hotel. He went to the front desk, checked the registration for Chloe, saw that Chloe and Sofia were in the same room, then turned and left.
He stayed at a nearby hotel alone.
Barbara saw Brayden and Chloe enter the hotel and then went home.
She now had leverage over Chloe!
Chloe went to Sofia's room.
"The people at your uncle's house are too much. How come they can't make room for you? They didn't send you here," Sofia muttered.
"Did I ruin something good for you by coming back?" Chloe said as she applied skincare products.
"As if. He's in the next room playing games," Sofia said somewhat resentfully.
"By the way, do you know anything about the sales recruitment drive at our company?"
"Aren't they recruiting for the entry-level sales position every day?" Sofia laid on the bed with a face mask on.
"Do they provide accommodation?"
"No, they don't. The company's accommodations are in high demand and are allocated to outstanding graduates. Why do you ask?" Sofia inquired.
"My cousin said she's going to the sales department of our company, but didn't mention where she'll stay."
Sofia removed her face mask. "Don't be too kind-hearted and give up your dorm room for her. I don't even recognize anyone else as a roommate besides you, let alone your cousin with such poor character."
"You haven't even met her, how do you know she has a bad character?" Chloe chuckled.
"Just think about it. If she had a good character, would she make you stay in a hotel alone?" Sofia reasoned.
Chloe thought to herself, 'That makes sense.'
If it weren't for her grandmother's sake, Chloe definitely wouldn't want to help her cousin.
She was just worried that Barbara would have a hard time alone in Maple Valley.
