Chapter 687 No Relationship Occurred
Barbara wanted to visit Jeffery. She hadn't seen him since he got out, and last time, Jeffery must have thought she had kidnapped Francis. Barbara needed to clarify: she hadn't; she had just taken Francis out for some fun. Now that the court said there wasn't enough evidence, how could Jeffery make such a judgment?
In the evening, Barbara went to the supermarket and bought a lot of food and supplies for Jeffery: men's facial cleanser, moisturizer, men's underwear, tank tops, lots of snacks, and a few T-shirts. After all, Jeffery was a few years younger than her, a young man who needed her meticulous care.
Unexpectedly, as soon as she got home, Betty saw all these things.
"Who did you buy these for?" Betty asked warily.
"None of your business," Barbara retorted. She knew Betty didn't want her to have any contact with Jeffery.
"It's for that Jeffery again, isn't it? I'm telling you, you'd better cut ties with him soon. No car, no house, and his mom is Chloe's housekeeper. Isn't that embarrassing? Even if you don't mind, I do. You were once a star, and now you're with a man who doesn't earn a penny. What will the neighbors say?" Betty lectured Barbara from her bedroom door.
Barbara became even more defiant. No matter what, she just liked Jeffery. She sat at her vanity, taking off her earrings, and threw them forcefully onto the table. "Why do you have to control everything? I'm almost thirty, and you still want to control who I like?"
"If you liked someone like Mr. Parker, I wouldn't say anything. I'd even support you. Mr. Parker can give you tens of thousands of dollars with a wave of his hand, but you don't appreciate it and instead act like someone who has nothing. Even though Mr. Parker is divorced, how many wealthy and powerful men are young these days? Many actresses marry divorced millionaires. I think you're out of your mind," Betty said, worried for Barbara. "You're not what you used to be. You probably won't get any more roles. Don't you need someone who can support you? What does Jeffery have? Next time Mr. Parker asks you out, you'd better go."
Hearing Betty say she wouldn't get any more roles triggered all of Barbara's anxieties. "Are you done?"
With that, Barbara shut the door. Couldn't she even like someone?
The next day, Barbara went to Jeffery's camp and sent him a message.
But Jeffery wasn't at the camp recently. He had rented an apartment by himself. At that moment, he was at home, shirtless and feeling frustrated. He had been expelled from the military. When Jeffery saw the message from Barbara, he didn't want to respond.
Jeffery was supposed to be promoted to squad leader soon. His performance was outstanding, and the promotion was just around the corner. But someone in his dorm had noticed him. That person had always wanted to be the squad leader, but Jeffery's excellent performance blocked his way. Growing more jealous, he found out that Jeffery had gone to a hotel that day. He managed to get the hotel surveillance footage and saw that Jeffery had checked in with a woman named Jane. Jeffery had always disliked Jane, even found her repulsive, so why would he check in with her?
So, this person reported to their superior that Jeffery had toyed with Jane's feelings and then denied it. When the superior questioned Jeffery, he thought it would be bad for Jane's reputation, so he stubbornly insisted, "Nothing happened!"
