Chapter 654 In Your Eyes, I'm That Kind of Person
After breakfast, the trio headed back to Maple Valley. Donovan was looking all moody, but luckily Chloe was home. He didn't say a word when he saw her, probably because of their spat last night.
Chloe was messing around with her course stuff on the couch, half-expecting Donovan to say something, but nope, not a peep. He just went upstairs, leaving Chloe even more ticked off.
About an hour later, Chloe wrapped up her work and went upstairs. Donovan was sprawled out on the bed, hands behind his head, eyes half-closed. He wasn't asleep, though; he wouldn't be lying like that if he was.
Just as Chloe was about to set her laptop on the bedside table, Donovan suddenly pulled her onto the bed. The sudden move made her heart race.
His face was super close to hers, and his intense gaze made her heart pound even harder.
"I want to adopt Jake," he blurted out.
Chloe thought he was gonna talk about Cynthia, but nope, nothing. And she wasn't keen on adopting Jake. He was Janet's kid, and Cynthia had adopted him. Given how Cynthia treated him, he probably had some issues. If they took him in, he'd definitely hang out with Francis. Chloe, being a mom, didn't want Francis influenced by Jake. Plus, if they adopted Jake, he'd call Donovan "Dad," and Chloe just couldn't deal with that.
She got up and sat on the edge of the bed. "Do whatever you want. But if you adopt him, Jake's gonna call you Dad."
"What about you?"
"He'll call me Aunt Chloe. We haven't remarried!" Chloe shot back.
Donovan yanked her back, hard enough to make her head spin a bit.
"Then why doesn't Francis call you Aunt Chloe if we haven't remarried?" Donovan growled.
"You're wrong. If we haven't remarried, Francis should call you Uncle Donovan," Chloe retorted.
Call her selfish or cold-hearted, but she just didn't want to adopt Jake. If they did, Cynthia and Janet would stir up drama to split her and Donovan up. Chloe felt too old for that nonsense.
Donovan stared at her, chest heaving, then bit down on her lip, making her wince in pain. Chloe moaned, face scrunched up, sweat beading on her forehead, as she pounded his chest with her fists.
Donovan wasn't mad about the adoption thing; he was mad about Chloe's attitude from last night. It had festered overnight, with no explanation, making him even more resentful.
Finally, he let her go.
"Donovan, are you nuts?" Chloe asked, frowning.
"Is that how you see me? Someone who'll do anything to get his way? I wanted to adopt Jake to show you I still have compassion, but you shot it down. So, who's really heartless here? Who's lacking compassion?" He tightened his grip on her.
Chloe's tone softened. She hadn't realized Donovan wanted to adopt Jake just to prove he still had a heart, especially to her.
"Do whatever you want," Chloe said, then got up.
