Chapter 296 Placing the Ring in Her Hand
Barbara initially went to Grandma Morgan's room to ease the tension that Donovan had created for her. She had planned to leave after placing the water there, but now she was intrigued. What type of ring was it?
"It's the ring for you," Grandma Morgan said, not knowing how to explain, her whole demeanor agitated.
Chloe and Donovan had only gotten a marriage certificate and hadn't had a ceremony, so she didn't have a ring.
She had never purchased one either. Right now, she was confused about which ring Grandma Morgan was talking about. Then it hit her - it must be the ring Amelia had given her, the one that showed her lineage.
This ring had been kept untouched in Chloe's personal wallet. She wasn't even sure if it was still there.
"I'll look for it," Chloe said, and then she began rummaging through her canvas bag.
Unexpectedly, she found it.
"This one?" Chloe handed the ring to Grandma Morgan.
Grandma Morgan, with her poor eyesight, held it up to examine it closely.
Upon seeing the ring, Barbara's heart skipped a beat. She was familiar with props used in filming and could tell that this ring was an emerald. It appeared that Chloe's original family was quite affluent.
Barbara thought about getting her hands on the ring.
The door outside creaked open.
Barbara knew it was Daniel returning.
She had a quick idea and sent a WhatsApp message to Betty: [Mom, find an excuse to start a fight with Dad, as soon as possible, and get Chloe out of here!]
Betty, though surprised by the message, felt obliged to comply since Barbara had brought them over from Sunshine Bay City.
Starting a fight with Daniel required no excuse. Her anger towards him flared up immediately.
"Coming back so late? Where have you been fooling around? You earn so little and spend so much," Betty cursed Daniel harshly.
Ever since Daniel's leg got injured, he's been different. He used to be quiet, but now he's a bit twisted psychologically. After a long day at work, he couldn't handle Betty's nagging.
"I didn't provoke you. Are you crazy? Always looking for trouble," Daniel retorted.
Sure enough, the two began to argue.
Donovan sat in his chair, watching the middle-aged couple's sordid quarrel without saying a word.
"What's going on with my parents? I'll go check," Barbara said, seemingly to herself.
"Uncle's back. I'll go greet him," Chloe said, hearing Daniel and Betty's argument, fearing it would get too ugly to handle.
Barbara, appearing to be considerate, opened the door for Chloe and followed behind her.
As soon as Chloe stepped out, Barbara quickly returned to Grandma Morgan and sternly said, "Hand it over!"
She took Chloe's ring, put it in her pocket, and closed the door on Grandma Morgan, who was on the verge of saying something in her confusion.
Outside, Daniel and Betty's argument escalated.
Despite seeing Donovan sitting calmly on the sofa, Daniel did not acknowledge him.
Moreover, seeing Donovan dressed in expensive clothes, Daniel assumed Betty was comparing him to Donovan, which made him even angrier.
"Say that again!" Daniel, eyes red with anger, grabbed a mop from the door and approached Betty.
"Ah... I'm going to die! My husband is going to hit me! A useless man who can't earn money outside is going to beat his wife to death," Betty screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Who's going to beat you to death? Beating you would dirty my hands!" Daniel shouted, jumping with rage.
"Chloe, I'm really sorry you had to see all of this today. You should go with Mr. Blake. You're pregnant, and I don't want to frighten the baby. I apologize for this family scandal," Barbara said, gently pushing Chloe from behind and looking very apologetic.
Chloe patted Daniel's hand. "Uncle, calm down. Family harmony is the most important."
"Chloe, are you leaving?" Daniel's anger subsided slightly upon seeing Chloe.
"Yes, you and Aunt should get along," Chloe said, then waved to Donovan.
Donovan got up from the sofa and walked out. He had become tired of the atmosphere in the house. The two of them headed downstairs.
