Chapter 130 Unfavorable for Conception
"Chloe, I'll go ahead first," Victoria said, patting Chloe's shoulder before leaving. She probably wanted to spare Chloe from the awkwardness. The hall was still buzzing with whispers.
"What's a contract marriage?"
"It's a marriage with a set start and end date. Is Mr. Blake in one, too?"
"I knew it! How could Mr. Blake suddenly be interested in her?"
"Jacob, stop spreading rumors," Chloe said, stepping forward and pushing Jacob away.
"Chloe, have you no conscience? You'd rather have a contract marriage with Donovan than with Brayden? Is money all you want? Can’t Brayden provide for you? I went to Central South this morning to drop Brayden off and saw Ellie going to work there," Jacob blurted out.
Just as Karen had left Brayden, now Ellie was there. It was inevitable for feelings to develop after spending so much time together. Once Brayden was won over by Ellie, what would Chloe have left? Seeing his plan about to be ruined, Jacob felt desperate. He had to expose Chloe and Donovan's true relationship today and let everyone at New East Group know the reality of their marriage.
Chloe had told him last time that her marriage with Donovan was a contract. Paisley was delighted. Jacob had gone over to Donovan's house and revealed their contract, but Chloe's "pregnancy" had thrown him off. Paisley was only focused on getting rid of Chloe's baby.
Amidst the commotion, Donovan exited the elevator. He walked up to Chloe, put his arm around her waist, and calmly said, "A contract marriage? Well, if it's a contract, then let's see if we'll get divorced."
The hall fell into an eerie silence, and Jacob's mouth hung open. Donovan kept his arm around Chloe's waist, her hand tightly pressed against his body. Her phone, which she had been holding, somehow slipped into Donovan's coat pocket, but she didn't notice.
As they reached the hall's entrance, Donovan told the security, "Strictly check everyone who enters from now on! Otherwise, pack up and leave." With that, he and Chloe went to the parking lot.
Chloe felt embarrassed for Jacob. "Where are we going?" Chloe asked Donovan after getting into the car.
"I'll take you to lunch." Donovan started the car.
"In the future?" Chloe thought about what Donovan had just said about their future. It seemed they wouldn't get divorced.
"We'll see," Donovan replied.
Chloe said, "Okay."
Donovan brought Chloe to a Mexican restaurant and found a private room. He didn't even order; the food was served.
The dishes looked delicious, and Chloe took a bite, savoring the flavor. "Is this what you eat for lunch?" Chloe asked, surprised.
"Yes."
"If you eat so well, why do you still let me bring you lunch?" Chloe couldn't help but complain.
Donovan chuckled, "To save money!"
Chloe didn't quite agree with Donovan's words. "You eat so well, and I have hot pot every day."
"Do you want to eat with me in the future?" Donovan asked.
"No way," Chloe replied. She loved spicy food.
"Eat less spicy in the future. It's not good for pregnancy," Donovan said.
Chloe was taken aback by the sudden mention of pregnancy. She coughed, choking on her water. "You're just kidding, right? That's not part of our contract marriage."
"Don't you like me?" Donovan smiled, his smile almost enchanting Chloe.
"A handsome and wealthy man like you, who wouldn't like you?" Chloe retorted.
"Including you?"
Chloe's heart raced nervously. Even if she liked him, she knew she wasn't good enough. Their backgrounds didn't match, and their future together would be difficult. Plus, she didn't plan to have children within five years. She had just joined the audit department, and she couldn't let a child affect her career.
Chloe lowered her head and drank her soup slowly. "You don't have to feel burdened because I saved you. I would have done it for anyone; it's instinct."
"Is that so?" Donovan asked. "Let's eat."
Today, Chloe had her hair tied up, looking more delicate. Her small nose was slightly upturned, her eyes round and bright, and her complexion was fair. Donovan really liked what he saw.
Today held many firsts: Chloe's first time in a ponytail, and their first time eating out. Despite the season having stripped the trees of their leaves, Donovan still felt a sense of spring and a slight intoxication. His lips curled slightly.
"Is your head still hurting?" he asked.
"Jacob's words gave me a headache," Chloe replied.
After finishing their meal, they headed back to the company. "Chloe?" a voice called from behind, filled with surprise.
