Chapter 668 Shield
At this moment, Donovan was talking to Francis outside the infirmary.
"How did Jake hurt his head?" Donovan asked Francis.
"Ralph hit him with a stone. He also said I have a sister named Rebecca. Dad, is that true?" Francis asked Donovan.
Donovan didn't like to bring up the matter of Rebecca, but since Francis asked, he decided to tell the truth. "You did have a twin sister named Rebecca, but your mom had complications during childbirth, and she didn't make it."
Francis suddenly understood.
"You said Jake got hurt because he was shielding you from the stone?" Donovan asked Francis again.
"Yeah, I didn't want him to," Francis said.
Donovan didn't feel heavy-hearted about visiting the patient; in fact, he even had a slight smile on his lips.
"Dad, is Jake your illegitimate child? Why do people keep saying that?" Francis was silent for a long time before finally asking.
Donovan was silent for a moment and then said to Francis, "Come with me."
Donovan entered the infirmary and asked the doctor to collect samples from both him and Jake for a paternity test.
He was doing this not just for Chloe but for everyone in Maple Valley, to shut their mouths.
"Why do you have to do this? I believe he's not your child," Chloe said. She thought that since they had adopted him, there was no need for this. Besides, if Jake found out in the future that Donovan had done this to determine if they were father and son, it would be so awkward.
"It's necessary," Donovan said to the doctor. "Go ahead."
Jake, being a child, didn't understand the significance of the sample collection. He just looked up with a puzzled expression.
After the samples were collected, the hospital also did a blood test for Jake, so it would be easier for doctors to treat him if he got sick in the future.
The test results were quite surprising. Jake's blood type turned out to be a rare one, just like his father, who had died of kidney failure. Because Jake's father had a rare blood type, his kidney failure eventually became untreatable.
Chloe and Donovan both had normal blood types, so if Jake got sick in the future, it could be quite troublesome.
Back home, Chloe sent Jake to bed early that night.
She also went back to her room.
Donovan was sitting by the bedside, reading a book.
Seeing that he wasn't worried at all, Chloe asked, "Aren't you worried about Jake's injury?"
"What's there to worry about?"
Chloe was a bit suspicious and asked again, "The stone grazed the corner of his eye. It almost blinded him."
"Yeah. If he hadn't done that, it could have been Francis who got hurt."
Chloe was lifting the blanket when she heard Donovan's words. She paused, thought for a moment, and then angrily said, "Did you adopt Jake, thinking he would be a shield for Francis? Or maybe a shield for yourself?"
The thought of Donovan thinking this way made Chloe's heart cold, and her whole body shiver!
Chloe couldn't believe she had married such a person. She thought about how he had treated Amelia, her family, and his parents, leading to such tragic outcomes for Paisley and Janet. Now, he was treating a child this way.
Donovan quietly looked up at Chloe, then lowered his eyes. "You wouldn't be wrong to think that."
"How can you be like this? How can I feel safe staying with you?" Chloe threw the blanket aside, feeling suddenly weak. "I'm going to sleep in the other room."
