Chapter 90: Don't jump to conclusions.
“What time will you be back?” Donovan asked Chloe in a bossy tone.
“Uh, I finished visiting my mom and decided to tidy up my winter clothes and bring some daily necessities for her,” Chloe replied.
“Approximately what time will you be back?”
Chloe glanced at the watch on her phone and said, "About two more hours."
"Donovan, your good wife sprained her ankle. If your marriage is not just an agreement, come and take her back," Jacob, standing behind Chloe, called out, trying to enjoy the situation.
Jacob and Karen appeared behind Chloe at some point. Karen was still wrapped in a towel, afraid of being seen by outsiders.
"She sprained her ankle?" Donovan asked Chloe.
"It's nothing. Just when I was going upstairs..." Chloe suddenly felt so upset. Her own brother didn't help her and instead made a fool of himself in front of others, letting them laugh at her. Her voice choked.
Donovan hung up the phone.
Chloe would not let Jacob see her emotions. She discreetly wiped away her tears and turned to Jacob, saying, "Brother, do you think you can provoke me into falling for your tricks? Whatever you want to see, I won't let you see it. The more you show off, the more you lack. But I don't lack anything, so why would I show off? You and your girlfriend flaunting it around, I imagine your relationship must not be going well, right?"
After speaking, Chloe returned to her room to pack her things.
Karen leaned against the door frame, observing Chloe. Besides youth, Chloe had nothing else going for her. What kind of taste does Brayden have?
Chloe knew Karen was watching her, but she continued to pack her clothes as if no one was there. Just when she was almost done, her phone rang again.
It was Donovan calling.
"Open the door," Donovan said.
Chloe wondered where Donovan was at the door. Suddenly, she realized that Donovan had arrived.
With a limp, she hesitantly went to the door and saw Donovan standing there.
"Sprained your foot?" Donovan looked down at her foot.
Chloe thought to herself, he must have come to prove to Jacob that their marriage was not just an agreement.
She replied with an "Mhm," and said, "It's not serious."
When Donovan entered the house, he held onto Chloe and sat down on the sofa. He crouched down and examined Chloe's foot before saying, "Why didn't you tell me you were packing your clothes? Come on, let's go home."
Donovan stood up and effortlessly carried Chloe in his arms, completely ignoring Jacob and Karen.
Chloe lived on the third floor, and Donovan carefully carried her downstairs. Remembering the last time he carried her like this at the hospital, Chloe's heart warmed up. She held onto Donovan's neck tightly and leaned her head on his chest.
Donovan glanced down at her.
As they reached the staircase, they coincidentally bumped into someone. Donovan furrowed his brows slightly, then nonchalantly carried Chloe out.
Chloe also realized that the person was Brayden and that he seemed extremely anxious. Chloe felt that he must have been looking for his brother at his own home, but why was he sweating so much?
Brayden saw Chloe and Donovan standing there and stopped. He turned back to look at them.
Donovan put Chloe into the car and caught a glimpse of Brayden still staring in their direction. So, he bent down and kissed Chloe on the lips.
Chloe suddenly felt her whole body heating up. She cooperated perfectly, her hands tightly clasping Donovan's neck.
She knew that Donovan was doing this to show Brayden not to have any inappropriate thoughts and to suppress his possessiveness.
Donovan turned around and got into the driver's seat, giving Brayden another glance.
"Does it hurt?" Donovan asked Chloe once they were in the car.
"Well, it doesn't hurt much. Actually, you didn't have to do that. There really is nothing between me and him," Chloe still harbored some resentment towards Donovan for kissing her just now.
"What did I say?" Donovan smiled insincerely. "Is your brother scheming something again? Why would he go to your house?"
"I don't know," Chloe frowned slightly. "Thank you for just now."
"Thank me for what?" Donovan asked.
"Thank you for saving face for me. Otherwise, my brother would have always thought of our marriage as a business arrangement," Chloe said. Although she had argued with Jacob just now, she knew deep down that she was guilty. If Donovan hadn't shown up, she really wouldn't have been able to prove anything on her own.
Fortunately, he came!
Although he kissed her to show Brayden, he also, by doing so, saved her dignity. Chloe felt a sense of balance, didn't she?
"Don't mention it," Donovan's tone was somewhat sarcastic.
