Chapter 281 He Waits for Her to Walk into the Trap
Jane opened the door and walked in. She was surprised to see Chloe holding Donovan's wrist.
"What are you two up to?" Jane asked.
"Wiping sweat," Donovan said casually, his gaze once again locking onto Chloe's face.
"Do you mean what you said?" Chloe squinted slightly, asking Donovan one last time.
She was naturally referring to the matter of going abroad.
"My promise always stands," Donovan replied.
Chloe let go of Donovan's wrist.
" If you want to get comfortable, do it at home in your own bed. This is a hospital," Jane said, then sat down in a chair and picked up Chloe's ultrasound report.
Upon hearing Donovan's promise, Chloe's heart finally calmed down. She casually asked Donovan, "Am I sweating?”
"A lot!" Donovan didn't know if he was mocking Chloe for being nervous in their confrontation or genuinely concerned about her. He took a tissue from Jane's desk and wiped Chloe's sweat again.
He had never wiped her sweat before.
"Everything looks good, no umbilical cord around the neck, and the baby's position seems favorable for a natural birth. Stay active," Jane said as she recorded today's clinic visit in Chloe's medical file. She added casually, "The baby is so well-behaved. You wanted to terminate the pregnancy back then.”
Chloe casually glanced at Donovan from the corner of her eye. Donovan returned the glance. On the ride back to Serenity Springs Estates, Chloe inquired, "Why did you come?”
"Susan said you were here for a prenatal checkup, so I came. No special reason."
Chloe sat in the back seat, her head turned towards the window.
Now, especially since she became pregnant, she wasn't as vibrant and energetic as before. Perhaps it was due to the changes happening or maybe the pregnancy was taking its toll on her.
Today, Donovan could sense Chloe's struggle.
"Why did you want to abort the child? Do you really despise them that much?" Donovan asked.
He even took a quick look at Chloe through the rearview mirror.
Chloe felt Donovan's words had a touch of sadness, not anger, but sadness. It was unusual to hear that kind of tone from Mr. Blake.
This tone managed to touch Chloe's heart, almost like a little prick.
"The child was a total shock. I wasn't planning on having children; I wanted to concentrate on my career. Having these two children also disrupted my studies, which was really frustrating," Chloe said quietly. "If they weren't twins, I might have considered having an abortion."
"So, should these two children be grateful that they are twins?" Donovan asked.
Chloe didn't respond.
"Have you thought of names for the children?" Donovan asked again.
Chloe was surprised. "Names for the children? We'll think about that after they're born."
Chloe was unsure about the future, especially when it came to deciding what surname to give the children. She thought they should probably take her surname, Baker. However, Donovan expressed his desire to raise the children, which left Chloe feeling conflicted. Should she tell Donovan that the children were his? If she kept the truth from him, what if he treated the children poorly in the future?
In Donovan's eyes, the children belonged to Brayden, his rival, which could lead him to raise them out of spite.
Chloe was concerned that Donovan was capable of such actions.
Thinking about this, Chloe felt another wave of anxiety. It seemed like this secret was on the verge of being revealed.
"Anything you want to tell me?" Donovan asked Chloe.
"No!" Chloe replied.
"Alright, then I'll wait," Donovan said with a smile, a smile that seemed to say he already knew everything.
His expression made Chloe's heart shiver.
It was similar to a situation in school where the teacher knew which student had made a mistake but didn't reveal it, waiting for the student to confess in the office, creating significant psychological pressure on the student.
Chloe didn't know how things had turned out this way.
But she hadn't done anything wrong. Did he kill her mother, and she wasn't supposed to hate him?
Chloe felt like Donovan was setting a trap for her, waiting for her to fall into it.
