Chapter 353 Let Me See How Well-Behaved You Are
Carol was sharp, rich, intelligent, and challenging.
She knew what she wanted and how to get it.
She understood why Chloe sent her to Brayden's firm: Chloe had kids now and no future with Brayden. She also worried Donovan might suspect something between her and Brayden, so she introduced Carol to South Central Accounting Firm. Chloe figured that eventually, Brayden and Carol would patch things up, solving her problems. Plus, Carol, who worked at Brayden's firm, would please Donovan and ensure he wouldn't mess with Carol's deals.
So today, she brought Brayden to see Chloe.
To be clear, she wanted to show Donovan where she stood.
Brayden came with a chip on his shoulder: Chloe wanted to set him up with a new girlfriend. He agreed, showed up, and wanted to see what Chloe would do!
“How’s South Central Accounting Firm doing now?” Chloe asked Carol, but also Brayden.
“Pretty good. It’s always been the best. With Brayden and me working together, it’ll only get better,” Carol said, glancing at Brayden.
She looked like she was following Brayden’s lead.
“Yeah, pretty good,” Chloe said.
“Chloe, thank you. This pearl necklace is a special gift I got for you. I’m sorry for what happened before. By the way, you look even better after having a child.” Carol took out a fancy pearl necklace and put it around Chloe’s neck.
Gotta admit, Chloe lit up. She already had great skin, and the necklace made her glow.
“Chloe, it looks great on you. Don’t take it off,” Carol said.
“Okay,” Chloe said, and she didn’t take it off.
“I’ll be leaving now,” Carol said to Donovan.
“Alright.”
After they left, Chloe took off the necklace.
She still had to be careful. What if something like white phosphorus spontaneous combustion happened again? What would she do?
With someone as sharp as Carol, she had to stay on guard.
“Why’d you take it off? It looked great on you,” Donovan asked Chloe with a teasing look.
“I’m always afraid she’ll pull some trick. I can’t trust her,” Chloe said, taking off the necklace and putting it in a box.
“Learned your lesson?” Donovan asked with a deeper meaning.
Chloe got what Donovan meant. “Of course, I’m very well-behaved now.”
“Let me see how well-behaved you are.” Donovan stood up from the couch and sat next to Chloe.
Chloe was on a single sofa. After he came over, there wasn’t enough space, so she had to lean to the side, half-leaning on Donovan.
Donovan stroked Chloe’s hair with one hand, and the other hand slipped under her clothes.
“Your chest isn’t flat either,” he teased.
Chloe growled, “Get lost.”
“What are you planning to do with this necklace?” Donovan laughed and asked.
“Secret. Anyway, I don’t feel safe keeping it at home,” Chloe said.
She had a plan. She was going to send the necklace to Barbara.
Last year during New Year, she got a bouquet of rose bears, which she thought Barbara sent to stir up trouble between her and Donovan; she kidnapped Chloe and made her sign the divorce papers; she left Walter to die; she caused Chloe’s premature birth, leading to Rebecca’s death. If Chloe hadn’t given birth prematurely, Rebecca would still be alive.
These were Barbara’s big mistakes, and there were many more minor ones!
If Carol did something to the necklace, it would harm Barbara. If not, Chloe would just be giving the necklace to Barbara, with no loss to herself.
Chloe hadn’t told Donovan about Barbara directly causing Rebecca’s death. At first, it was because her health didn’t allow it. Later, when she recovered, she thought quietly. If she told Donovan, he might deal with Barbara the same way he dealt with Ellie.
Chloe didn’t want that. First, Barbara was still her relative, and they were close. Chloe wanted to leave her some dignity. Second, Chloe wanted to handle Barbara herself.
