Chapter 236 It's Really Tough on Donovan
Chloe tumbled to the bottom of the staircase, her belly and head throbbing in pain.
She struggled to get up but found it impossible.
Ann from the first floor had just finished her shift and heard a commotion from the second-floor landing.
Intrigued, Ann approached and was astonished to find Chloe sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, her face bruised.
Quickly dialing emergency services, Ann had Chloe rushed to the hospital.
After a thorough examination, the doctor determined that, thankfully, the fetuses were fine. Chloe's forehead was bandaged, and she was advised to rest in the hospital for a few days.
Presently, Chloe was extremely frail.
She had an inkling of who might have pushed her. Ann had previously mentioned Ellie's behavior at the company. Despite being reassigned to a logistics role, Ellie continued lingering at the company, much to Ann's frustration.
"You scared the life out of me. I'm glad I was working overtime today," Ann said, expressing her lingering panic.
"At what time did Ellie finish her shift yesterday?" Chloe inquired of Ann.
Ann was taken aback. "Are you suggesting someone pushed you? Do you suspect Ellie? But Ellie had already left that day."
Chloe smiled, "Never mind. I don't suspect anyone."
She kept her suspicions hidden from Ann.
Knowing Ann had already harbored ill feelings toward Ellie, Chloe feared repercussions if the situation escalated.
"I'll check the surveillance. If it was Ellie, she won't escape my grasp," Ann asserted.
"Don't bother checking. There's no surveillance in the corridor. She must have planned it." Chloe felt a chill down her spine, especially recalling the impact on her back.
'If Paisley were to discover that the baby I'm carrying is actually Donovan's, she might have already taken action, wouldn't she?' Chloe thought.
Paisley and Barbara's tactics were undoubtedly more vicious, surpassing simple ones like pushing her down the stairs. They could resort to strategies that would render Chloe unable to conceive for the rest of her life.
The mere thought sent shivers down Chloe's spine.
'Thank goodness Ann was working overtime tonight. But what about next time? Keeping the fact that I'm carrying Donovan's child secret is really important. I must stay vigilant.' Chloe thought to herself.
"By the way, are you available tomorrow?" Chloe asked Ann.
"If you're in need, I will make time even if I don't have any. What's the matter?" Ann responded.
"Donovan asked me to go to his company to get a lot of project materials tomorrow. Given my condition, I definitely cannot go. Can you go for me? I estimate there will be a lot."
Chloe knew very well that during this period, Donovan had intercepted over ten orders from the First accounting firm, enough for their small law firm's annual business volume.
Ann was taken aback. "Donovan gave you?"
"Yes. You need to act swiftly. I fear complications may arise."
Weakened, Chloe drifted off to sleep, pondering, 'If Mom were still alive, she would be here to provide food and lend a sympathetic ear.'
Alas, she no longer had a mother.
The next day, Ann stood in Donovan's office.
Glancing at the stack of documents on his desk, she eyed them appreciatively.
"You're alone, where is she?" Donovan inquired, gesturing toward Chloe's absence.
"Chloe is ill and in the hospital," Ann explained.
She noticed the ample documents on Donovan's desk and was eager to secure them.
"She's ill?" Donovan frowned. "What happened to her?"
"Last night, the elevator on the second floor malfunctioned. She took the stairs and was pushed down. I suspect it was Ellie. You know her infatuation with Brayden. Perhaps she envied Chloe being pregnant with Brayden's child. There seems to be something off about her." Ann pointed to her head, hinting at Ellie's mental state.
Donovan's expression darkened considerably.
Suddenly, Ann realized she may have erred in revealing "Chloe is pregnant with Brayden's child" so bluntly.
"I apologize, Mr. Blake. That was inappropriate of me," Ann quickly added.
"That doesn't make any difference," Donovan said. "Is Chloe's injury severe?"
"The doctor mentioned she was quite startled and needs to rest in the hospital. She's quite fragile, which is why she sent me," Ann explained.
After a moment of contemplation, Donovan asked, "Which hospital is she in?"
"Maple Valley University Hospital. It's close to our company. Will you be visiting her? She truly is in the hospital." Ann couldn't believe Donovan might suspect Chloe was feigning injury as an excuse to avoid collecting orders.
'Between the two divorced individuals, it might actually be Chloe who betrayed first. It's really tough on Donovan,' Ann thought.
